Spirit of Beacon Day Hosts Logo Design Contest: Last Chance To Enter! Sunday Midnight

The Committee for the Spirit of Beacon Day is launching a Logo Design Contest for the redesign of the Spirit of Beacon Day, now celebrating its 45th year. The winning logo will be awarded $300, and will be used on all signage, website, social media, merchandise, etc. All entries will be published for viewing, so that everyone can see the range of ideas.

Design Direction:

  • Community: Reflect Beacon as a community.

  • Location: Reflect Beacon in its unique location between the mountain and the river, with buildings and houses in between. Consider using illustrations of a mountain, river, apartment building and house.

  • Colors: Colors can reflect the Beacon City School District colors, but do not have to. The color purple has been mentioned as a desired color, in addition to earthy colors like green, brown, red, and blue. No need to base your colors off of this website. These colors are temporary and will be changed once the logo is selected.

Everyone!!

The "Spirit of Beacon Day is alive an well," said former Chair Gwenno James to the City Council during a meeting back in July, during her final appearance as Chair. She was there to present the new Board who volunteered after she put out the call across different channels, which was also published by A Little Beacon Blog.

A Little Beacon Blog's publisher, Katie Hellmuth Martin, felt the role a natural fit for her, being that she had produced 2 floats for South Avenue Elementary School (and decorated 1 drive-by car in the parade during the pandemic), as well as her experience hosting pop-up shops and other community events in her former office space on Main Street.

Junior (Zayed) Dabashi of Key Food had also volunteered to serve, with his experience running many community events for Key Food's family grocery stores in Beacon and in Milford, PA, including car shows (one of his favorites), and open-to-the-community cookouts at the Mosque in Beacon.

Ali T. Muhammad volunteered as well, and as a Beaconite who served on Beacon's City Council, his commitment to Beacon runs deep. You'll see him on the day of the event with a microphone in his hand, serving as a Board Member and MC.

Nickeya Allen pulled in as Treasurer, eager to serve, as her two young children had attended the parade and festival in year's past, and she has participated with ALBB before via Juneteenth.

The reaction from friends and community members has been consistent, and in two forms:
1. "You are crazy!"
2. "Amazing, thank you!! You might be crazy!"

It is true. Anyone who steps into these roles knows that they have a marathon ahead of them. The difference is this is a group marathon where many in the community want to also dive in, get creative, and express what is Beacon.


This Year's Theme: "The Origin Story"

The theme of this year's Spirit of Beacon Day is: "The Origin Story," and here's why:

Event organization wasn't the only reason the role felt right to Katie. In her introductory speech at City Council for the public to hear, she stated: "When the pandemic blossomed into the racial reawakening across the United States and even in Beacon, NY, I started covering the protests down Main Street that marched to Memorial Park and Pete and Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park to listen to people's stories during the open mike sessions.

"As a reporter, I got out of my comfort zone and spoke with neighbors I had never spoken to before, heard their stories about their lives in Beacon, and reflected. In 2020, when September rolled around, I thought the Spirit of Beacon Day was the perfect time to kaleidoscope this. To shine the light on the origins of why the Spirit of Beacon Day was created in 1977." But the pandemic happened, and squashed all in-person events. Gwenno and her committee did all they could to produce a virtual version of the day to keep the spirit alive.

According to an article in the Beacon Evening News from 1985: "For a number of years, the students from the Beacon School System and the community were having some problems that had racial overtones. It was during the winter and early spring of 1977 that, for several days and nights, racial problems became severe. The Sheriff’s department was called into the community to help bring the situation under control. A community meeting was held at the Howland Library."

During that meeting, a solution arose: a community day to bring the people together to better understand each other. This day was called The Spirit of Beacon Day.


The 45th Year For The Spirit Of Beacon Day

In early Committee discussions, the Board members expressed the importance of opening up the day to new organizations to participate. The Committee is so excited to dive into this project to bring it to you, with you. We encourage all of you to apply for a Table and/or to participate in the parade. if you have developed something in the last few years, let's see it! Show it to the people so that more young people can experience it. If you have had something for decades, but never considered participating in this day, please do so now!

Yes, we need so many Volunteers! Volunteering can include helping parade floats and marchers get lined up the day of the parade, helping vendor tables get set up, connecting with non-profits, speaking to Main Street business owners, putting out yard signs in advance, going to collect those yard signs once the day is over, emailing businesses for sponsorship opportunities, producing Instagram art and posts, running the Facebook page, etc.

The Spirit of Beacon Day now has a GoFundMe drive! Producing this event does cost a bit. Our goal is to raise funds needed for the essentials, and have stipends that we can offer to the schools for decorating their floats, as well as a few other ideas. We do want a cushion so that we are not starting with a low balance at the start of the planning phase. Due to time, we are not having a Fundraising Event this year because August is when everyone goes on vacation, and September is Float Building Time!! All hands on deck.

The Spirit of Beacon Day is everything with its vendor tables and experiences. Which non-profits and social entities making a difference can the community reach out to and meet at a table? Vendor tables are limited, and we are keeping it to non-profit and social groups or entities only. Application required, and if accepted, a $35 Table Fee is needed to secure the spot. Food businesses are encouraged to reach out to partner with a non-profit if they want to offer food. We are encouraging After School Clubs to apply to represent at a table, and other groups not normally seen but need the exposure to reach our young people. Non-profits and groups can serve/sell food as usual! Otherwise, we encourage everyone to also visit our brick and mortar restaurants in Beacon, in addition to the rare street food you'll find from the organizations.

Beacon Open Studios Is Back! This Weekend! July 22-24th - Events All Weekend

If you're new to town, you may not have experienced Beacon Open Studios, an always evolving interactive art experience that happens once a year. It is the one time that you get to wander around Beacon to find yourself inside of an artist's studio. You get to see their tools, smell their mixtures, and maybe see some artists in action.

Beacon Open Studios took quite a blow during the shutdown of the pandemic. As with all things wonderful in Beacon, this is a volunteer effort, where leadership can change from time to time. New energy came in this year to produce this event for you, led by artist  Darya Golubina.

Her preferred medium is oil paint or graphite but some of you may know her as “the hand," handling tiny little masterpieces in the photos she takes for Beacon’s Tiniest Gallery. The miniature gallery is a project she helped start with her friends when the isolation of the pandemic took over and they craved connection to their community. When she’s not painting or documenting the gallery’s newest acquisition, she photographs life-size humans at a studio she manages in NYC. Born in the Ukraine; raised in Brooklyn; graduated from SVA. Darya says Beacon, "feels like home."

Bringing back Beacon Open Studios certainly helps Beacon feel like home to all who live here.

Author Imani Perry At Bardavon For Juneteenth For Her Book "South To America"

The author and multi-degree earner Imani Perry will speak on her new book South to America, followed by a Q & A and a book signing in the Bardavon lobby. The event is free, and is presented by the Poughkeepsie Public Library District and Bardavon Presents. Tickets are limited to two per person and can be reserved here. Imani is an American interdisciplinary scholar of race, law, literature, and African-American culture. Order the book online from Binnacle Books in Beacon.

In her new book South to America, the author seeks to change how people view the American South and, thus, the country’s history as a whole. Her writing and scholarship primarily focuses on the history of Black thought, art, and imagination crafted in response to, and resistance against, the social, political and legal realities of domination in the West. She seeks to understand the processes of retrenchment after moments of social progress, and how freedom dreams are nevertheless sustained. Her book: Vexy Thing: On Gender and Liberation (Duke University Press 2018) is a work of critical theory that contends with the formation of modern patriarchy at the dawn of capitalism, the transatlantic slave trade, and the age of conquest, and traces it through to the contemporary hypermedia neoliberal age. Her book More Beautiful and More Terrible: The Embrace and Transcendence of Racial Inequality in the United States (NYU Press, 2011) is an examination of contemporary practices of racial inequality that are sustained and extended through a broad matrix of cultural habits despite formal declarations of racial equality.

Imani is the author of 6 other books, including Looking for Lorraine: The Radiant and Radical Life of Lorraine Hansberry, which received the Pen Bograd-Weld Award for Biography, The Phi Beta Kappa Christian Gauss Award for outstanding work in literary scholarship, the Lambda Literary Award for LGBTQ Nonfiction and the Shilts-Grahn Award for nonfiction from the Publishing Triangle. Looking for Lorraine was also named a 2018 notable book by the New York Times, and a honor book by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association. It was a finalist for the African American Intellectual History Society Paul Murray Book Prize. Her book May We Forever Stand: A History of the Black National Anthem, winner of the 2019 American Studies Association John Hope Franklin Book Award for the best book in American Studies, the Hurston Wright Award for Nonfiction, and finalist for an NAACP Image Award in Nonfiction. Her most recent book is: Breathe: A Letter to My Sons (Beacon Press, 2019) which was a finalist for the 2020 Chautauqua Prize and a finalist for the NAACP Image Award for Excellence in Nonfiction.

Imani is the Hughes-Rogers Professor of African American Studies at Princeton University and a faculty associate with the Programs in Law and Public Affairs, Gender and Sexuality Studies and Jazz Studies. She is a scholar of law, literary and cultural studies, and an author of creative nonfiction. She earned her Ph.D. in American Studies from Harvard University, a J.D. from Harvard Law School, an LLM from Georgetown University Law Center and a BA from Yale College in Literature and American Studies.

Spirit Of Beacon Day Slated To Dim To Darkness If No New Leaders Step In

UPDATE: Hearing the call, a new Chair and committee members have stepped up. New Volunteer opportunities are available and will be announced at the 7/5/2022 City Council Meeting.

Beacon’s unique Spirit Of Beacon Day has been an annual celebration of Beacon’s community of colors since 1977, after what was rumored to be a bar fight over a girl spilled into the streets and escalated into “racial tensions.” Fighting for several days and nights culminated, and a community solution was created. Generational Beaconites know that Beacon’s Main Street was once a place to avoid, for fear of fighting and drugs. To this day, Beacon’s Main Street hosts a plethora of types of people, where we all try to live in harmony and learn about each other.

After nearly fading to dark in 2017, organizers including Gwenno James stepped in to carry the torch. The Spirit of Beacon Day has been organized by a small core volunteer committee, and the torch has been passed on from one generation to the next. The committee has always worked closely with the city administration, alongside the support of the mayor and city council.

Now in 2022, the Spirit of Beacon’s current chair, Gwenno, made this announcement at a recent City Council meeting: “There is not enough manpower on our volunteer committee to coordinate Spirit of Beacon Day this year.” She explained how other committee members have also needed to step down during the past couple of years. “We are making a call for new leadership and volunteers to step in.” The Spirit of Beacon committee is seeking a new Chair, as well as Director of the Parade and Director of the Street Festival. Leaders are also needed to organize the kids events and entertainment for the day.

About The Spirit Of Beacon Day

According to "Celebrating Our Centennial," published by the Beacon Historical Society. According to the historians, in the winter and early spring of 1977, "racial problems became severe" for several days and nights. Meeting several times to discuss the issues were city leaders and concerned agencies, including a representative from the FBI's Community Relations, Dutchess County Youth Bureau, then-Mayor Robert Cahill, local legislators, City Council, clergy people, and representatives from youth-focused organizations like Beacon City School District, the Howland Public Library, the Beacon Community Center, and others.”

What resulted was a day called the Spirit of Beacon Day, where organizations were invited to parade down Main Street, serve cultural food, and perform joy. The mission of the Spirit of Beacon Day is: “A day to bring the City together, especially the children and youth....the community should get to know one another better, learn to know what each other likes in conversation, feelings, entertainment, education and food.”

For the last 45 years, the event has been run by volunteers and is not a city-produced event. The City of Beacon produce very few events, in fact. It is the people of Beacon who make the magic happen.

Wooo! Like you needed another thing to do this Saturday! Nation-wide, women, men and theys will be gathering to fight to keep government’s legislation off our bodies. No, this is not related for one second to the mandating of vaccinations. This is a life-changing event that men have almost no responsibility in when they impregnate a women. Girls who are just getting their periods for the first time are already being educated by their mothers that their rights to freedom and smart choices about when to start a family are being snatched from from them, in order to possibly snatch the baby in order to put it up for adoption or enter into foster care, both money-making situations.

It's Official! Second Saturday In Beacon Is BACK! BeaconArts Has Spoken.

You all have been asking: “Is Second Saturday still going on in Beacon?” and ALBB’s answer has been: “The spirit of Second Saturday has never left. The art galleries are still having their openings. There just hasn’t been, like, a banner hanging over Main Street or something like that. But go! Go to the galleries!”

This week, the organization who originated Second Saturday in Beacon, BeaconArts, announced that Second Saturday was officially BACK. BeaconArts announced to its newsletter community: “A full calendar of events is on its way! We’re also in the process of adding more benefits for BA Membership on every level. Perks will include discounts, workshops, and exclusive member-only events.”

The galleries and shops exhibiting art that BeaconArts is promoting for May 14th include: Garage Gallery Beacon, Hudson Beach Glass, Fridman Gallery, Bau Gallery, Mariala Gostudio 502, Marion Royael, Silica Studio 845, Rick Rogers Studio, Hyperbole, Clutter Magazine, and Landmark Beacon (this is the former Star of Bethlehem Baptist Church that currently serves as an event space).

Beacon does not disappoint with being able to not contain itself for excitement! The Pink Unicorn has been spotted at Marion Royael Gallery with a bubble machine for Second Saturday pre-game. ALBB was lucky to have met the person behind the costume at a recent I Am Beacon mixer at Homespun this week. We know the story behind how they got their costume. They’ll need to chime in to let us know if we can share the behind-the-scenes story.

Ramadan Mubarak! As the Crescent moon was spotted in Saudi Arabia today, Ramadan begins Saturday, April 2nd. It lasts the month, and those who recognize it will be fasting from sunrise to sundown until May 1st. Beacon's boutiques and shops are at it again! Thought you wanted to go to their late night shopping event, Hop And Shop, during the winter holidays? So did everyone else. The shops have banded together to stay open in the First Friday of every month. Rain or shine. Hot or cold. Shopping in Beacon on a Friday night is actually a sacred space - the weekend crowd has not arrived yet. The streets are peaceful yet relaxed as everyone is letting go from the week. Mark this in your calendar on Repeat, and take yourself on a stroll or roll down Main Street for evening shopping.

The first Lit Lit at the Howland! Poet Kristen Holt-Browning (originally scheduled for March) will be joining as a featured reader and reading from her newly-published chapbook, The Only Animal Awake in the House. “All our advance reading slots are now full. But we will have a bunch of spots available for you to sign up to read when you arrive, if you get there early! Everyone can read their own writing of any genre for a maximum of five minutes, until we run out of time! The Howland requires proof of full vaccination the door, along with a photo ID. They will also have soft drinks, wine, beer and snacks on hand to buy. We know that it is April Fools' Day, so we intend to be as foolish as possible.”

Community Safety Day Happening From Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps

Join the Beacon Volunteer Ambulance Corps (BVAC) for the 6th Annual Community Education Safety Day & EMS Week Celebration on May 15th, 2022 at the Beacon Elks Lodge from 12-4pm. Several safety opportunities are in store for you.

Says Deborah CortesEMT-B and Vice President of BVAC, “This event was created to help educate the community on emergencies and get the opportunity to meet community members as well as they get to know us and other first responders around the county. Another goal is to make them aware of numerous resources that are out there and available for them in the county. We hold this event on the week of May 15th specifically each year because it’s EMS Week! We do take donations if somebody does want to donate. This event is free for persons of all ages and we’re hoping to see everyone out there!”

While there, if you are thinking of getting involved with BVAC, on-site interviews for career and volunteer opportunities will be available as well as free giveaways and activities!

Beacon's Parade of Green is On - Rain, Snow, Sleet or Shine - Honoring Anthony Lassiter, Grand Marshall 2022

RAIN OR SHINE

With weather apps calling for 100% chance of something wet this Saturday, March 12, 2022, Beacon’s Parade of Green is on with no rain date. Said one of the parade organizers, Kimberlee Markarian in response to Councilmember George Mansfield’s question of if the parade is rain or shine during this week’s City Council Meeting: “It is rain or shine! Which is so amazing! We went through a whole lot of things in the last couple of years. A little rain…we got it!”

The parade route is from Pohill Park (the corner of Main Street, 9D and South Avenue at Bank Square), runs down Main Street, and ends at the Dummy Light (near 1 East Main near Trax Coffee and the Chocolate Studio). Main Street will be closed (but all shops and restaurants open!), so the parade floats, cars and walkers will have full access to roll through. The parade starts at 12pm from Pohill Park.

Be sure to visit Meyers Old Dutche for their special “Shamrock” drink inspired by the parade. Later on, find a calm and cozy spot inside of Two Way Brewery for their live music, featuring the TMcCann Band starting at 7pm (food also available from the Flying Jibb)

Honoring Anthony Lassiter, Grand Marshall For 2022 Parade Of Green

The Parade of Green is honoring Anthony Lassiter, was born February 1947 in Beacon. He attended Beacon High School where he was on the football, wrestling, and baseball teams. He graduated high school in 1966 and was drafted into the US Army in the spring of 1967.

Private Lassiter was trained to be an Army electrician. His primary responsibilities included building helicopter landing pads for Cobra gunships. Additionally, Specialist Lassiter was assigned to the "burial detail firing squad" where he performed the 21-gun salute at the funerals of fallen heroes.

Ultimately, Specialist Lassiter was sent to Republic of South Vietnam. Shortly after being promoted to Sargent, Lassiter and his Company were attacked by hostile forces. Lassiter was injured in that attack and was awarded a Purple Heart. He received an Army Commendation Medal for his distinguished service and was honorably Discharged from the Army in November 1969.

In January 1970, he went to work at IBM in East Fishkill. After several years, he became a manager. One of his favorite assignments was recurring college students to work for IBM. He worked at IBM for the next 30 years. Anthony married Patricia Lassiter. Together they raised 2 sons: Justin and Aaron, and have 8 grandchildren. Mr. Lassiter is now retired.

Anthony Lassiter serves his church and assists throughout the community in multiple volunteer activities. Anthony served on the City of Beacon Planning Board for 15 years, and continues to serve on the City of Beacon Housing Authority Board of Directors. He is a member of the American Legion Post 203, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 666, the Beacon Community Lions Club, and is a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart.

Anthony is a long standing volunteer at the St. Andrew's / St. Luke's Food Pantry. For many years, he has served on the Spirit of Beacon Day Committee, and in 1991, was chosen as the Spirit of Beacon Volunteer of the Year.

Anthony is registered with Donate Life Organ Donation, and actively encourages others to register. As a civic minded individual who strives to serve this community and is dedicated to his fellow veterans, Anthony's commitment is limitless. This list only touches on his accomplishments.

The Army Commendation received by Lassiter proclaimed: "The loyalty, initiative, and will to succeed that Specialist Anthony V. Lassiter demonstrated at all times, undoubtedly made him one of the finest soldiers in this command." It can be concluded that Anthony Lassiter's loyalty, initiative, and will to succeed make him one of the finest citizens in this City of Beacon.

Recycling Opportunity: Hazardous Waste Disposal & Electronics Events - Registration Required

Dutchess County Division of Solid Waste Management announced 2022 dates for their Household Hazardous Waste Disposal & Electronics Recycling Events. Registration opens March 9, 2022, and is limited to a first come first served basis. Only 380 households will be served! Open to Dutchess County residents only, and is partially funded by New York State. The actual event is April 9, 2022. There will be a couple more opportunities again later in the year.

Residents should expect to experience wait times when they arrive at the location due to high demand, advised Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro. Registration is limited to the first 380 households; pre-registration is required for this event, and there is a $10 registration fee; registration often reaches capacity quickly, so residents are encouraged to register promptly.

County Executive Marc Molinaro said, “We can all take an active part in preserving our planet for future generations, and Dutchess County’s upcoming Household Hazardous Waste & Electronics Recycling Event is the perfect opportunity for residents to get a jump on spring cleaning and help the environment. We appreciate our residents’ desire to keep Dutchess County clean, and we urge residents to register promptly.”

Every Week Recycling Opportunities In Beacon’s Transfer Station

While this event is where you can offload hazardous materials, some of these items may also be dropped of at Beacon’s Transfer Station, including TVs and tires. There may be a fee for some electronic items, but the price is not stated on the City of Beacon’s website at this time. Guess you’ll find out when you go! Bring a check or cash. Easy Recycling Locations For Batteries And Cords For Beaconites

Sunny Saturdays are for…dropping off specialty recycling of very specific things! Each drop is a little bit of hope.

Batteries and cords can go to Best Buy at the Poughkeepsie Galleria (and several other Best Buys).

The clear filmy plastic bags can go to the special bin at Hudson Valley Brewery behind 1 East Main near Trax Coffee Roasters down in Beacon’s free municipal parking lot. According to Green Beacon Co., the recycling of the filmy plastics was an initiative started by the Beacon Lions and Key Food Beacon. It transitioned to Green Beacon Co. The initiative then partnered with Beacon’s Conservation Advisory Committee.

An upcoming opportunity for recycling Household Hazardous Waste items is on April 9th, May 21st and September 17th. A person must register to the hazardous waste event. Registration begins April 9th and in the past has gone fast. Find details here.
