Second Saturday Art Gallery stroll in Beacon
SEEKING SPONSORSHIP
Every month, A Little Beacon Blog seeks out what is exhibiting at each gallery. It takes an incredible amount of time and we hire a talented editor, Catherine Sweet, to do the job. We need ongoing sponsorship of this guide in order to continue producing it.
Sadly, until we have regular sponsorship of this guide, regular updates to this guide have paused. The list of art galleries remains, in order to continue to make it easy for you to have a list of all galleries and descriptions in one place.
There is a way to make sure gallery listings are fresh:
Artists: Subscribe to any level of Art Gallery Guide Advertising, and send us your new info each month. Even with Corporate Sponsorship, your contribution of even Level 1 helps this publication a lot. Learn more here.
Corporate or Individual Sponsorship: We can create fresh listings for everyone if we have at least one Corporate Sponsorship, but five is ideal for our business. We don’t break even with one, but it would help! Learn more here.

Second Saturday 101
Second Saturday is a lively day into night in Beacon, and is a celebration of Beacon's galleries, restaurants and other businesses on the second Saturday of every month. Dan Rigney, former president of BeaconArts (the organization who encouraged this movement to happen over a decade ago, and who still heavily promotes the events) says: “Back then, Beacon was one of the last places people outside of town thought to go on a Saturday night. Now Second Saturday has become a part of the fabric of Beacon. It’s such a part of it, many galleries have their opening events on other Saturdays, so that they get two big crowds each month.” Second Saturday provides a great reason to walk Main Street and beyond, and explore the events going on around town. It's always a pleasure to dine your way through Beacon, so turn to our Restaurant Guide to help you puzzle out where to eat and drink as you explore special exhibits and happenings.
What to Know About This Guide:

Howland Cultural Center
477 Main St.
Beacon, NY
(845) 831-4988
The Howland Cultural Center is a historical gem in Beacon, commissioned in full by Joseph Howland, a Civil War general and former New York State treasurer, whose Hudson River estate (Tioronda) was located a mile south of the then village of Matteawan (later merged with Fishkill Landing to form the City of Beacon in 1913). He conceived of the need for the library with other wealthy philanthropic and culturally minded people in the area, with the idea “to raise the intellectual and cultural levels of people in the community.”
Howland hired his brother-in-law, the famed architect Richard Morris Hunt, (Biltmore House, The Breakers, Marble House, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and others). By August, 5th 1872, the building was complete and the library, known as The Howland Circulating Library. It was one of the last libraries to use natural light in its main reading room. That detail is fiercely protected today, to allow the light to come in through carefully placed windows, when considering neighboring building projects.
Filled with beautiful details both upstairs and down, experiencing the inside of the Howland Cultural Center and the many exhibits and events that are produced there is a must-do on your Beacon list.
