Since this Summer, we’ve been planning a significant disturbance of our business as a usual society because our Black lives matter." SCHEDULE: Parking and Retail Therapy Guide 10/16/2020

Alright so it's raining...but that might not stop anyone from coming up to this region for a visit, especially during leaf season. Apparently in Cold Spring, people are parking a bit haphazardly, causing parking tickets to increase from 50 in June, to 277 in September, according to the Highlands Current. Meanwhile, in Phillipstown, officials are threatening to sue New York State over its management of visitors to local parks. Officials have discussed deputizing a tow-truck company to tow away illegally parked cars near Indian Brook Falls in Garrison. In Beacon, The Parking and Traffic Safety Committee has been hearing from residents whose personal property and street parking have been hampered by hiker parking. The cul de sac at Exeter Circle was a place families moved to in order to use the circle for children riding bikes and playing, but can no longer due to constant hiker parking, according to a resident who submitted a complaint to the committee. A proposal for "resident only parking" has been made for Exeter Circle, as well as to Mountain Lane. The issues have made it to City Council who is holding a Public Hearing about it on October 19, 2020. Meanwhile on Main Street, drivers do commonly not see people standing in crosswalks, and with more young and teenage children and families out during the middle of the day, it is paramount that you take notice, and drive slow enough to even notice a person standing on the side of the road. Spirit Of Beacon Day On Sunday; The Retail Therapy Guide - 9/25/2020

Everyone! It's Spirit of Beacon Day this weekend! With a city-wide drive-by parade on Sunday! That's right - pandemic birthday party style. The Spirit of Beacon Day Committee has been hard at work imagining how to have a festive day for the 43rd year, and select organizations have begun decorating their cars. Details on how the day works are listed below. It should be noted that the Spirit of Beacon Day started after racial unrest between Beacon students and the community in 1977. Many organizations came together to figure out how to address the discomfort, and it was decided that people needed to come together to get to know each other better and listen to one another. Read an older newspaper article about it here. The Jewish community will observe Yom Kippur on Sunday at sundown, the day of atonement. We Made It! Retail Therapy Guide - 9/18/2020

We did it! Beacon made it through the first week of school, being one of the few districts who is trying the Hybrid system of 2 days at school in person, and 2 days at home. Free meals for all children are prepared and provided by the district Food Services team (funded by the USDA through Dec. 31, 2020), and teachers are creating their own systems of working with their kids. Technological glitches happen, will always happen, and organizational systems will be reworked once they leave paper and are in practice. Some families who opted for Hybrid changed their minds for health or logistic reasons to be 100% Home, and some families put children into different schools entirely. As a community, and in the name of public school for all, we are figuring it out. So here is an all-caps HIGH-FIVE to those of you who are knee-deep in it. Still dealing with the COVID pandemic, the country finds itself in a reckoning for racial justice, reexamining systems and traditions and practices that disproportionately benefit white people. New York has been doing so well with bringing down the COVID illness rates as we move through the phases of reopening, that it feels like we’re creeping closer to The New Normal. So once again, the usual Main Street vigor of Second Saturday art happenings will be muted. That doesn’t mean nothing is going on, though. As official champions of the local arts scene, BeaconArts has stayed active, sharing info about grant/financial relief programs for people working in New York’s arts industries, and hosting conversations with local artists. But an agreement has been reached, and Marilyn at A Little Beacon Blog has written all about it, so you can know what to expect. Governor Cuomo clarified guidelines in July that require bars, restaurants, breweries and tap rooms to offer food to customers, in order to encourage people to sit down/still in one place and not mingle and shoulder rub, as is usually the case in a bar. However HVSF was unable to hold any performances due to rehearsal and gathering restrictions out of safety. Boscobel waved the HVSF rent of $50,000, and moved forward with re-imagining how it can continue. Additionally, they will begin researching and incorporating the histories of Boscobel’s early Black inhabitants, funded by a Humanities New York grant.
