Ida In Beacon :: Retail Therapy Guide 9-3-2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
September is known to be one of the most beautiful months in the year - the crispest blue sunny skies surrounding the back-to-school season. September is the time to begin again. After 2001, that changed when optimism was ripped into by the planes hitting the towers, exposing our vulnerability.

Crisp blue skies in September are the result of humidity clearing after a hurricane passes through. The most devastating days the morning after a hurricane are often the most beautiful. Beaconites in Beacon, as well as those commuting in, and those who went away for college, or careers were impacted differently as ALBB began to document here. If you have a story you wish to share, please submit it to editorial@alittlebeaconblog.com so that we can help document what happened.

Weekend train service along the Hudson line has been suspended, and the MTA says they hope to have limited service running next week.

Governor Kathy Hochul declared a State of Emergency for 14 counties in Downstate New York, and Dutchess County is one of them. County Executive Marcus Molinaro encouraged residents and businesses to document damage in preparation for applying for FEMA money.

COVID-19 numbers in Dutchess County are holding steady with an increase (hovering at 795 Active Cases), with 32 of those Active Cases in Beacon, leaving the week with a rise in hospitalizations (42 people in the hospital), and prayers for two more deaths since we last wrote (467 people who have died). Former Albany councilperson Ronald Bailey has passed from complications due to COVID-19.

In times of uncertainty, comfort can be found in preparations. Like cleaning the gutters, trimming trees, reviewing home insurance policies, investing in that sub-pump, and tightening your estate planning. A Little Beacon Blog's Business Directory can be a place to start to find a resource to partner with.

Meanwhile, keep your spirits up with knowledge, plenty of good food, veggies, and seeing friends. Move your body (see ALBB's Adult & Kids Classes below) and more ideas on how to do that are below!

TWO WAY BREWING COMPANY
18 West Main St.

Two Way is inspired by the defining feature of the local area, the brewery is named after the “two way” Hudson River. The river is technically an estuary, which is a mixture of fresh water and salty seawater. There are about two high tides and two low tides throughout the day. They produce unique local beers where anyone and everyone can go relax, hang out, and participate in the craft beer experience. Experience their beautiful outdoor patio!

Happening-This-Weekend-Email Logo.png
All hearts and eyes are with Afghanistan as troops and veterans work to save as many Americans and Afghans as possible. Coverage in national media including the Washington Post, the BBC and NPR have been following different details as events unfold. New stories, like this one are coming out: "An army of veterans and volunteers organizes online to evacuate Afghans, from thousands of miles away"

ALBB is looking for local resources who are helping with refugee resettlement so that we can promote it. If you know of a local group who is helping, please also let us know.

ALBB's poetic writer, Izdihar Dabashi, shared a fundraiser from a local resource, Columbia Muslim Students Association (MSA). Izdihar is a graduate of Marist in Psychology and Neuropsychology, and a Masters student at Columbia studying Psychology, Neuroscience, and Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Columbia MSA says:

"In response to the disastrous earthquake in southern Haiti and political/humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, Columbia MSA is raising funds to support response & recovery in Haiti and Hazara refugees fleeing Afghanistan. The proceeds from this fundraiser will be evenly distributed to charity organizations Hope for Haiti and GIFT Organization's Refugee Sponsorship services.

"GIFT Organization is a CRA registered charity in Ontario, Canada. In light of the Canadian government allowing 20,000 Afghan refugees to settle in the country, a coalition of Canadian Hazara community organizations and North American Islamic Centers have made a goal to sponsor 20 Hazara families to settle in Canada, using GIFT as an intermediary fund. This fundraiser is focused on sponsoring Hazara Afghans, an ethnic minotiry that has long been persecuted by the Taliban. Hazaras are targeted because 1. many are Shia Muslims, 2. they have distinctive ethnic roots and 3. they have separate economic and political origins."

Yanarella Dance Studio
312 Main St., Beacon, NY
Teacher Spotlight

Sue has been dancing since she was 5 years old.  Her first dance lesson was at Yanarella School of Dance and that is where she spent all of her dancing years.  She attended many dance conventions, NADAA, Dance Caravan, and was even a guest teacher at some of those conventions. She continued her dance education at Cortland State where she studied under Gus Giordano.

She studied all forms of dance; ballet, tap, jazz, acrobatics and modern.  She even did Tap Dancing on Pointe but her love and greatest accomplishment as a young dancer was Acrobatics!  Sue had many solos throughout the years at Yanarella – using top hats, glasses of water, stairs – anything that the director could imagine.

She and her partner at that time, Eric Villani, entered the Dutchess County Fair Talent Show and won first place.  This sent them to the Syracuse State Fair where they competed as well.  This was back in 1969!!

Sue continues to teach and her love for tap dancing shines as she teaches the Adult Tap Classes.  She enjoys the comradery of the adults and their eagerness to learn something new in their life.  She is full of energy and it shows!

As You Go Out And About...Weekend Guide For 8/20/2021

Happening-This-Weekend-Email Logo.png
As the last days of summer are here, you are wanting to enjoy them at fairs, festivals, movie nights under a pavilion, and more. When you do, we are recommending you be mindful of the high positivity rate of COVID-19 right now in Dutchess County. During the decline in June 2021, there were 56 Active Cases in Dutchess County, according to Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro during an address this week. As of August 18, 2021, there are 732 Active Cases. As of today, there are 30 Active Cases in Beacon.

To help you track it, ALBB has revived our publishing of local Active Case and Hospitalization Numbers. You can read today's here.

When you go out, try to create social distancing for yourself, even if it is not being provided for you. Like at a fairground or amusement park. Use your body language to make your space big. Only 55% of residents in Dutchess County have been fully vaccinated with all of the recommended doses of their brand (meaning, a good handful did not get their second shot).

DIRTY BACCHUS
380 Main Street, Beacon

Gregoire & Judicaëlle Perron / La Combe Aux Reves / 100% Jacquère / Jack Erre Dans Les Abimes 2019 - Jack Erre “in the depths” offers a stunning example of that mouthwatering Alpine acidity that can transform a wine from very good to truly great by way of a kind of earthy transubstantiation that arises when grapes from generous mountainside soils are tended by committed, scrupulous vignerons. Here, that acid functions as a fine mesh purse to hold the rest of the experience - citrus and other tree fruits, a hint of dried banana chips, a rock dust minerality that has the sharpness of fresh early morning mountain air - together in thrilling harmony. $33. Such a beautiful bottle! Might buy - might save and use as a flower vase.

Friday The 13th...What It Really Means...& The Retail Therapy Guide 8/13/2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png

Well...well...well...It's Friday the 13th! This day has never felt particularly scary (unless you were a Knights Templar in 1307...eeks, King Phillip the IV of France!), and now we possibly know why, thanks to the consistent posting of Beacon-based soul healer, clairvoyant and seer, Shannon Brandt, owner  of The Raven and The Wolf Spiritual Services.

During November 2020's Friday the 13th, Shannon shared this post that might give you something different to think about today. Shannon combines it with the possible root of the word "Friday," where some believe the last day of the week was named after the goddess Freya. According to some scholars, Friday is named after two goddesses: Venus (goddess of love) and Freya (goddess of love, fertility, battle, death, and magic).

The number 13, according to some in spiritual circles, is connected to a woman's cycle as pulled by the moon, which used to be, and still is by some, celebrated openly. Usually in a society or community with a patriarchal edge, a woman's cycle is viewed as shameful and/or something to hide or hate, rather than encouraging a woman to realize "their amazing potential to create and hold space for new life," says author Tanaaz Chubb.

Therefore, Shannon encourages, Friday the 13th was considered the day of the Goddess. Yet was hindered by people like Heinrich Kramer in 1400s who felt threatened by a woman's power or healing knowledge, and developed trials to have women burned at the stake.

For Friday the 13th, we're going to go with the celebration of the female energy version, and take this moment to suggest that you consider period panties that are keepers instead of disposable pads or tampons. Read all about the best ones in Good Housekeeping! And consider donating some to a Tiny Food Pantry near you.

The Countdown Begins...Retail Therapy Guide 8/6/2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
Lots to think about as we enter into the final month of summer! Firstly, Beacon restaurants are feeling it with the nation-wide difficulty in hiring people who don't want to return to work in the hospitality industry, or at least under prior conditions. Listen to this New York Times podcast, The Daily, for a few reasons why. Those include intolerance for customer-behavior (when customers are rude when being served - so please be extra mindful of your own behavior to include more appreciation).

SPIRIT OF BEACON DAY
Secondly, while some traditional Fall events are coming back to in-person status (see Save The Dates below), Beacon's decades-old celebration of the youth and culture, Spirit of Beacon Day, will not be returning to in-person status this year. The organizers, spearheaded  by Gwenno James, went to great length to reach out and interview leaders and participants to find out if a traditional parade with activity tables was what they wanted as the Delta variant surges. Several agreed, including PTOs representing the parents in schools who produce school floats, that September is stressful enough with back-to-school, with the added stress of the pandemic and children under 12 not being vaccinated, that the public, in-person parade will go on pause for a second year. The organizers felt it too difficult to adhere to New York State Guidelines to keep people socially distanced during an event that is normally, joyously, packed shoulder to shoulder. Listen to their presentation to City Council last week.

JOBS
Thirdly, a lot of businesses are hustling to grow! ALBB has seen a few job postings this week, like this one from the Hyacinth Group for a Social Media Lead, this one from Care 4 Me looking for a daycare teacher and assistant, and this from the River Pool looking for a lifeguard. Listing your job with ALBB is a direct financial way to support us, and a vote of confidence that you are seeking great candidates from our readership. Post your job here.

GOOD MORNING AMERICA
Fourthly, check out which Beacon-business was featured on Good Morning America! A Sponsor of ALBB's Business Directory, Malouf's Mountain was selected by Yelp editors to be featured as one of the best hike-in camping spots in New York.

SECOND SATURDAY SPONSOR OPPORTUNITIES
And finally, Second Saturday is coming up next week! A Little Beacon Blog needs sponsors to keep it going. There are so many galleries, we can no longer list new openings every month or week. We do list all existing galleries, however. Please consider Sponsoring this Art Gallery Guide to guarantee your opening gets promotion! A huge thanks to No. 3 Reading Room and Photo Books Works who asked to be a sponsor years ago, and stayed on even while closed during the pandemic. Heartwarming.

DIRTY BACCHUS
380 Main Street, Beacon

Good red wine & a good label! >>>
Naboso / Ritual 2017 - an earthy funk with a deeply satisfying expression of Blaufränkisch from a tiny 2-hectare vineyard along the Little Carpathian mountain range in Slovakia. It has a deep smoky aroma arising from dark fruits, black cherry, and black plum, embraced by wafts of ancient old logs, like stepping into a long-abandoned log shelter in the woods, and dense forest floor. The palate is both fresh and densely structured, balancing the flowing dark fruits already mentioned plus a bit of red currant with an equal measure of rocky, earthy minerality. The tannins are gripping and the acid slowly rises to an unmistakable prominence in the finish, suggesting this might benefit from another five months or so on its side. Only a few of these vintage remaining in stock! Only $42.

And just like that, it's about to be August! Summer, slow down!

Another much-loved destination is once again turning on the lights of their stage - Quinn's. Starting in September, Quinn's is hosting performances on Saturdays and Monday's. For the month of November, the theme of Monday is Joe, where all performances are done by people  named Joe, aka "Joevember." Get the details here!

Lucky you - it's Live Acoustic Night at Meyers Olde Dutch! Starting at 7pm Friday, enjoy local artist Edward Stanton. Meyers has not one, but two outdoor eating options (back patio and parklet) as well as brand new air filtration system.

Homespun Foods has brought back their Farm Kits - a creation during the early pandemic days when they needed to survive during the shutdown. Katie James Inc. Was able to create this new Grocery section for them on Homespun's Squarespace website, with Farm Kits being the first product. Katie James, Inc. opted to create an eCommerce section called “Grocery,” where all food products can go in, and auto-populate. Homespun staff will be trained in how to create a Grocery product so that the section can build itself. Of course, Katie James, Inc. can do it for them in our Pay As You Go program if they get too busy in the kitchen.

The River Pool! And Other Happenings | Retail Therapy Guide 7/16/2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png

Summer is officially here because...the River Pool at Pete & Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park is open! And their main fundraising event, the Newburgh to Beacon Swim, is also scheduled for next weekend. Registration to be a fundraising swimmer is open now!

Not for the faint of heart, the Hudson River, which the Lenape called River Shatemuc (which means "river that flows both ways" before it was renamed by a colonizer,) is a challenging swim. Volunteer kayakers and jet ski drivers accompany swimmers. You can get more info here.

Summer is also officially in its second-half, as the corn is knee-high, and the chorus of cicadas has started in the trees. The birds are busy hunting them.

If you can't make it, you'll want to stop in at some point because you'll want to try the new Glorie Daze (pictured here). This is Two Way's latest sour offering! A lightly tart fruit ale, this brew was naturally soured with wild lacto and fermented with the same local yeast that they use to make their signature Confusion Ale. After fermentation, they generously dose it with local strawberries grown by their friends at Glorie Wine. Delightfully fruity and gently puckering, this one will help you power through the rest of summer.

TIN SHINGLE
She's back! Beacon-based Moraya Seeger DeGeare talks to Katie of Tin Shingle about her experience on Good Morning America. The nation's favorite morning news show featured Moraya's chalk art protest, which she produced via her activism arm, To My Old Racist Earth. Most people in business dream of getting onto Good Morning America. The show approached Moraya, interviewed her in Pete and Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park, and interviewed several other families as well. The end result of the segment was good, but not as Moraya expected. Good Morning America hyjacked the message and turned it into something else. We talk about it in a PR Therapy session. We analyze the segment, and discuss ways to leverage this media placement for more media placement - even if it wasn't a fave. This is free for Beaconites to stream for the weekend. Then it's available to Tin Shingle Members to stream anytime.

Art + Retail Therapy + Eating Good Guide 7/10/2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
"Is Second Saturday Still Happening?"

ALBB has received this question so many times, that we needed to write an article about it. Exhibit openings by different galleries seem to be happening during different weeks of the month (gasp!), so we aren't sure what is officially official.

One thing is for certain: people are starting to feel the Second Saturday  energy again. Now that most destinations are re-opening and galleries are able to set their own social mingling and masks rules. Art hunting, gathering, and enjoying seems to be back.

Second thing is for certain: in order for A Little Beacon Blog to continue producing our much appreciated Second Saturday Art Gallery Guide, which used to list any exhibit we could find in Beacon, we need sponsor support. We opened our interactive advertising program to galleries, the same one that retail shops and restaurants have access to. The opportunity is also there for non-art businesses, like banks, software companies, individuals etc. who want to show their support for the arts. See here for details!
THE SECOND SATURDAY ART GUIDE

No. 3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works
Second Saturday Outdoor Event: Saturday, July 10, 2021
Time: 2-6pm
Location: 469 Main Street, Beacon, NY 12508
Special opportunity to meet the artist, Zachary Skinner, on Second Saturday in an outdoor event at No. 3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works.
About The Exhibit:
EXTRACTION: Art on the Edge of the Abyss is a multimedia, multi-venue, cross-border art intervention which seeks to provoke societal change by exposing and interrogating the negative social and environmental consequences of industrialized natural resource extraction.

For the month of July into August, re-scaled reproductions of Zachary Skinner’s original paintings will be on display in the reading room’s storefront windows as an outdoor exhibit. Of this work, Skinner says:

I attempt to represent human encounters with a damaged post-industrial landscape. The imagery draws from scientific realities about our present-day environment and impending threats to our existence on Earth. My primary concerns are the need to confront climate change, the polluting of our land, resource wars, and the displacement of disenfranchised peoples and whole ecosystems in the name of progress. My work illustrates that, when confronting these realities, the path to a sustainable future lies within our shared inner strength and creativity.

DIRTY BACCHUS
380 Main Street, Beacon

The thing about Dirty Bacchus is, owner Steve is quite into the research behind the wine he carries. Any bottle in the store is sourced from somewhere unusual. For instance: The Bott Frigyes is 100% Olaszrizling 2019. The craft behind the production of the bottle for the year goes something like this: Half of 2019 was made using the "hamburger method" (open vat fermented for a week in three layers: foot trodden, whole clusters, and destemmed), and the other half was the whole bunch pressed and aged 1 year in Hungarian oak.

Says Steve: "Olaszrizling is not related to Riesling in any way and does not taste like it. Here, on the nose, I get a ripe cantaloupe, overripe peach, and dried dusty apricot. Deeper in, a nearby pack of Beech-Nut Fruit Stripe chewing gum and, I’m thinking, tiny, homeopathic amounts of rhubarb and celery sprouting from the rich soil...The tension among all these elements is dazzling and the balance impressive, evoking emotions of both delight and deep satisfaction. This is surely a Slovakian wine you want to try!* $37.
Read Steve's full wine description here >
Steve is quite prolific and will help you meet and appreciate the bottle. Wine lovers must make this a regular pickup point for wine.

ANTALEK & MOORE INSURANCE AGENCY
340 Main Street, Beacon

A group health insurance plan is sponsored by the company, as opposed to an employee getting individual coverage on their own, and is commonly offered as a part of a larger benefits package. Businesses with at least one common-law employee are eligible to purchase a group health plan.  A group health plan offers more value to both the employer and employee in several areas including tax benefits, lower premiums, and access to more doctors. Health Insurance is often the number one benefit people seek when looking for a job, for themselves and their families. There are a number of reasons that you, as an employer, may want to offer health insurance to your employee, as the overall health and wellness of your employees and your company.

Happy 4th! Weekend Retail Therapy Guide

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
Happy 4th of July! While there won't be fireworks locally, Beacon will be popping with color thanks to the "Let's Chalk & Art Together" movement inspired by last year's Juneteenth celebration. Local therapist who specializes in intersectionality (the overlapping of personal characteristics that make you who you are, and how others treat you), Moraya Seeger DeGeare, will be chalking up the streets with messages encouraging kids and adults to start conversations about systemic racism. An official event happens Sunday down at Pete and Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park - fitting, as Pete and Toshi are Moraya's grandparents.

A Little Beacon Blog is proud to announce the winners of our 2nd Annual Juneteenth Art Showcase! We commissioned 2 designers this year to design the logos used in our first call for art - Dom (Dominesha) Garth and Vintage Messiah.

Two artists were selected:
Rachel Lewis, a poet who has been published in local literary journals and zines. Four poems have been published, which address what it means to date a Black woman; creation; beginnings; and the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Vintage Messiah, a recording artist and producer released his talents on paper to illustrate two sketches commemorating the day.

Two supporting sponsors commissioned the grant ALBB is able to award these artists. Special thanks to an Anonymous Reader, and to Moraya Seeger DeGeare of To My Old Racist Earth.

You can read Rachel's poems and see Vintage's sketches here!

EXTRACTION: Art on the Edge of the Abyss
at No. 3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works
Day:
Last Day is July 6, 2021 - Go Now
Time: Anytime - Exhibit is in the storefront windows
Location: 469 Main Street, Beacon NY 12508
EXTRACTION: Art on the Edge of the Abyss is a multimedia, multi-venue, cross-border art intervention which seeks to provoke societal change by exposing and interrogating the negative social and environmental consequences of industrialized natural resource extraction. A global coalition of artists and creators committed to shining a light on all forms of extractive industry—from mining and drilling to the reckless plundering and exploitation of fresh water, fertile soil, timber, marine life, and innumerable other resources across the globe— the Extraction Project will culminate in a constellation of nearly fifty overlapping exhibitions, performances, installations, site-specific work, land art, street art, publications, poetry readings, and cross-media events throughout 2021and beyond.

No.3 Reading Room & Photo Book Works is participating as a venue in this “ruckus” by presenting projects by several artists working to shine this light through photography, printmaking, publications, installation, video and painting throughout summer and fall, 2021. This is the last weekend to see the rescaled reproductions of Kyle Gallup’s original litho prints on display in the Reading Room’s storefront windows as an outdoor exhibit.

Reading of the Declaration of Independence
Day:
Sunday, July 4, 2021
Time: 11 am
Location: 1 Municipal Plaza
Dennis Pavlov returns to read the Declaration of Independence. "There is more to these patriotic holidays than parades, fireworks, cookouts and BBQs. Our forefathers, I don't believe, should be left out," Dennis told City Council when promoting the event during a meeting. This year, there is no longer a Declaration of Independence Reading committee, refreshments will not be served and copies of  Declaration of Independence will not be handed out. Perhaps next year, Dennis will also consider reading the Emancipation Proclamation by Abraham Lincoln, the news of which was delivered and read 2 years late on June 19th to Texas by Major General Gordon Granger. However, read what Gordon actually said.

No matter what you do, some power is in your hands to compel the media to write about what you hope they will cover. This TuneUp episode is chalk full of ideas on what to do. Including how to pitch 4th of July Independence Day in a different way - as in - introduce some more forefathers and foremothers ancestors to the usual lineup. This is how to connect Juneteenth with July 4th - both Independence Days. It’s an educational opportunity on many levels. For this weekend only, Tin Shingle has opened up this TuneUp for Hudson Valley friends to stream free. Normally all TuneUps are free for members of Tin Shingle, or are sold separately.

It Doesn't Have To Be This Way & Happenings For This Weekend! | Retail Therapy Guide 6/26/2021

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png
When we got the email from Homespun to sunset the wine subscription and disable the wine store of their website, our hearts sank. A Little Beacon Blog wears many hats, one of which is designing and maintaining websites for private clients.

Homespun knew that the selling of wine bottles would be temporary and was to help them increase sales during the pandemic, but no restaurant anticipated the 24hr notice they received this week when Governor Cuomo ended the State of Emergency status, which scrubbed other relief rules that the state legislature hadn't decided on yet.

There is a lot more to this story, as 38 other states in the country have approved extending the alcohol to-go business model for restaurants, while 11 states have made it permanent. Yet New York, whose governor prides itself on being ahead of the curve, gave a big 🤷🏼‍♀️ "Oh well" as the state legislature went on recess until January 2022, thereby stalling any changes.

Homespun will be just fine - you can order incredible wine by the glass now LOL, but this issue exposes the decades-long stronghold that wine and liquor lobbyists have on the state. Remember the 7pm wine store law that everyone pushed for to help Beacon wine stores be allowed to stay open until 9am? Take a read of this latest law dispute over wine bottles and spirits to-go here.

Juneteenth! And The Weekend Roundup / Retail Therapy Guide

Things-To-Do-In-Beacon-Retail-Therapy.png

For the second year in a row (see our first year!), A Little Beacon Blog is holding a Juneteenth art contest. The aim is to reserve space for the African American community to show their voices and visions during Juneteenth.

WHAT IS JUNETEENTH?

Juneteenth is a holiday of independence celebrated on June 19th by the Black community commemorating the liberation of the enslavement of Africans taken from their homes in other countries, separated from their families, and brought to America so that white Americans could have their own Independence Day from Great Britain on July 4th. Some Native American tribes in Oklahoma kept African slaves as well, as was a recent focus during the Tulsa Race Massacre in Greenwood.

Juneteenth has been celebrated for over 150 years by African Americans, but not all knew about it, as it wasn’t taught regularly in schools. Last year, during the social reckoning of 2020, Juneteenth got elevated, paid attention to, and respected by the white community and other races. On June 17th, 2021, President Joe Biden signed Juneteenth into law as a national holiday, where the government workforce and schools will observe the holiday. Several businesses have pledged the paid day off as well.
The Beacon City School District is pretty excited about it.

HOW THIS WORKS

Submit your work for consideration to be published on A Little Beacon Blog.

  • Any age is welcome.

  • People from the African American community, of any mix or origen.

  • African Americans living in the Hudson Valley of New York.

  • Any medium is welcome. If you recorded a song, send it via Spotify or something we can embed. Actually, we can embed an mp3 on our own website! Artwork that is painted, pixelized, collaged, quilted, etc.

  • Please answer these 2 questions with your submission:

    • What do you want to tell the United States about what you want changed?

    • What do you want to tell _______ your town in the Hudson Valley about what you want changed? Any wish. What is your greatest wish?

  • A Description of your artwork.

  • Selected submissions will be published on A Little Beacon Blog, along with your answers. You can elect to skip giving an answer.

  • Selected submissions will win grant money if we get sponsors. Of the sponsorship dollars, 100% will be divided among the artists.

  • Email art file to katie@alittlebeaconblog.com

  • Deadline: June 23rd. Publish Date: June 26th

100% Of SPONSORSHIP GOES TO PRIZES/GRANTS

We can offer prizes if we have sponsorships. Depending on how many submissions we get, we could award grant money to several people. Therefore, 100% of sponsor dollars will go towards these grants.

To sponsor:

  1. Visit our Reader Support page and select a dollar amount.

  2. In the Comments, please indicate if this is to sponsor this initiative, and we will set it aside. Please also indicate if you want your name or business name listed with the final publishing of all artwork.

Once all sponsorships are in, the dollar amount will be divided evenly among the selected submissions.
Thank You!

BINNACLE BOOKS
321 Main Street, Beacon

Yuri Herrera, “A Silent Fury: The El Bordo Mine Fire” - “The alert was first raised at six in the morning: a fire was tearing through the El Bordo mine. After a brief evacuation, the mouths of the shafts were sealed. Company representatives hastened to assert that ‘no more than ten’ men remained inside the mineshafts, and that all ten were most certainly dead. Yet when the mine was opened six days later, the death toll was not ten, but eighty-seven. And there were seven survivors.
A century later, acclaimed novelist Yuri Herrera has reconstructed a workers’ tragedy at once globally resonant and deeply personal: Pachuca is his hometown. His work is an act of restitution for the victims and their families, bringing his full force of evocation to bear on the injustices that suffocated this horrific event into silence.”
