This is the notice to the public that Beacon’s City Council will be going into a private meeting called Executive Session, after the public meeting, to discuss “Personnel.” They don’t divulge which city employee it is they are talking about. So we don’t know for sure if they will be talking about Reuben on Monday. It is notable that Reuben’s employment “hearing” after his 30-day unpaid leave was Friday, March 5, 2020. He has not returned to work, as the unpaid leave letter stated that he would not until after the hearing.

Beacon’s new City Administrator, Chris White, in his first days on the job after he finished training with former City Administrator Anthony Ruggiero, put a Black employee on unpaid leave for 30 days in January into February, after that employee declined to resign, and declined to sign a document saying that Beacon could fire him at any time for any reason, but wouldn’t give a reason, according to that employee, Reuben Simmons.

“Civil Service” Jobs - An Employment Chess Game

Designation of an Unpaid Leave of 30 Days comes with a letter. And a packet of complaints, which fulfill an obligation of finding satisfactory grievances for a “Civil Service” job to get rid of someone. These jobs exist within a city or town. Civil Service guidelines are the rules that govern how it’s all going to work. Like a game of chess. We learned a little (OK, a lot) about this when Reuben spoke about it on a podcast the summer of 2020.

Reuben at the time was speaking about how his job title of Highway Superintendent dissolved in 2018. Disappeared. Into dust. He went back down to Maintenence Worker because Dutchess County told the City of Beacon that the job title didn’t exist for Beacon - after Reuben had been promoted by others into the job. But how or why or when did Dutchess County know that? After then-City Administrator Anthony Ruggiero recommended Reuben? And after Mayor (at the time) Randy Casale, who referred to himself as “Highway Superintendent for 16 years” every chance he got, also recommended Reuben?

Beacon’s “Highway Superintendent,” which - according to why he got the job that replaced someone else and made their job title dissolve - should be titled “Superintendent of Streets.” This word choice is what dissolved former Highway Superintendent Reuben Simmons’ job in 2018.

A technicality was triggered. Which is what made Reuben’s co-worker, Michael Manzi, get promoted to the job title that Dutchess County said was accurate for Beacon: Superintendent of Streets. This simple word change (with at least one more job qualification that came with it), dissolved Reuben’s position of Highway Superintendent. To be replaced by Michael Manzi as Superintendent of Streets. There was a lot of hooting and hollering by the Highway Department the night of the vote on Michael’s promotion back in 2019. Reuben wasn’t even demoted. His position just dissolved into Maintenance Worker. All legal. See minute 50:17 of the Beacon City Council video.

But even today, March 6, 2021, Michael Manzi is still identified as Highway Superintendent, not the job title with which he allegedly checkmated Reuben. This isn’t the only job title inconsistency on the City of Beacon’s website: See “During Hot Mess Of Water Department Hires, Beacon Passes Diversity and Inclusion Statement.” But the City of Beacon currently won’t comment on it.

Former Mayor Randy Casale spoke about this job situation also on a podcast. Off-mic, Randy called Reuben’s then-demotion the “biggest regret” of his mayoral career, because he couldn’t stop it. But he tried. Issues of Civil Service, run by Dutchess County, can be triggered by anyone who wants to switch up how a job hire or promotion is going to go, and can make a job disappear. Legally.

But that demotion was in 2018. The 30-day unpaid leave comes in 2021.

The Only Reason ALBB Knows About The 30-Day Unpaid Leave -
The City of Beacon Won’t Comment

When people are hired or promoted, there is a public vote on it by City Council. When they are put on unpaid leave, or perhaps fired or asked to resign, there is nothing public. In fact, police officers who were recently hired, fired or resigned are only traceable because of a public inquiry via a FOIL (freedom of information law) request. That link is offered here on the City Clerk page, but has not been updated since the mayor promised it would, in August of 2020.

How did I find out about Reuben’s $0 income? And how he’s looking at a career loss at the end of it?

He called me. After the first mega blizzard dumped 2.5 feet of snow on Beacon, I answered the phone and right away thanked my friend Reuben Simmons for keeping Beacon plowed. In every City Council meeting, councilmembers had been thanking the Highway Department for plowing.

Reuben had been part of the team driving the trucks clearing the streets for years. This January was another year where he would have been out in the early morning into night, earning overtime that is part of Beacon’s annual budget each year. The overtime is not a surprise. The employees count on it. And they plan for surplus salt, trying to estimate how the winter is going to go.

“I’m sorry, Katie,” Reuben responded to my appreciation. “I haven’t been in the trucks. I have been put on unpaid leave since mid-January 2021. I am embarrassed and I don’t know what is going to happen.”

This isn’t the start of Reuben’s story. His story started years ago. This is the current step.

30-Day Unpaid Leave - How That Works

In the letter sentencing Reuben’s 30-Day Unpaid Leave, City Administrator Chris White instructed Reuben to not speak to any staff of the City of Beacon, or touch any property of the City of Beacon, during work time.

Reuben, who served as the department’s CSEA Union President from 2009 to 2017, had been organizing employees - those who would listen to him, anyway, since not all of them liked him. Especially those who he gave low marks to when he was CSEA Union President, like the employee who allegedly casually brought in a gun to the workplace 6 months after Reuben filed a harassment complaint against him for circulating an unsanctioned petition against Reuben to keep him off a negotiation committee for a contract, or those who didn’t like him being their boss. And then they became his boss when his job title conveniently dissolved.

Reuben’s organizing efforts included supporting the 2 other Black employees. Contract negotiations were happening for their salaries. He wanted all employees to know about their rights, and think about their best interests. Employees of the Highway Department have been without a new contract for some time. The City of Beacon links to one from 2015. According to Reuben, the employee health insurance payments have increased, and with the rising cost of rents and property taxes, people are not earning enough to keep up.

Verifying Reuben’s 30-Day Unpaid Leave - Stonewalled

To begin researching the story, I sought verification from the City of Beacon. I emailed City Administrator Chris White. Chris replied: “We do not comment on personnel matters.”

I then pursued the CSEA Union President, Paula Becker. Not being able to find her anywhere on the internet, and not realizing that she was a City of Beacon employee, I called her number and left a voicemail. And again the next day. The day after that, I received the following email from Chris: “I received notice from other staff that you had called regarding a personnel issue. As I mentioned previously, the City does not comment on personnel issues. I would appreciate you contacting me if you have questions in the future.”

Respecting his original request, I hadn’t contacted any staff. His response got me thinking that someone was impersonating me. I didn’t realize that Paula’s phone number extension was one digit different from Chris’, and that the CSEA Union President was a staff member of the City of Beacon. Did that yield fair representation or advocacy?

Union President As City Of Beacon Employee - Helpful or Fair?

Reuben was used to the dual role of staff and union president. He used to be the CSEA Union President as a Highway Department employee, before he was Highway Superintendent. “I was comfortable with it because I was a strong individual. Some people are not fine with it because the employer can give them certain benefits. Makes it an uncomfortable and tough situation. I was comfortable with having those battles,” Reuben reflected. '“It depends on your character and your personality. Paula, I believe, has a great heart, and wants to see the good in everybody. That's not necessarily the characteristics that sometimes you need, to be tough and fight back face-to-face.”

Verification Gained - ALBB Sees The Unpaid Leave Letter & Complaint Log

To publish this story, I felt better seeing the letter outlining the unpaid leave. I believed Reuben, but I wanted to see the letter and see how it was worded. I wanted to see the complaints behind the disciplinary action. The first response from anyone I verbally tell this story to is: “Well, what did he do? He must have deserved it.” Reuben maintained his answer: “I don’t know.”

“But did they show you a list of complaints?” I pressed.

“Yes, but they don’t say exactly what I did,” Reuben explained. “For example: I ‘drove out of City limits in a company vehicle.’ But I went to Glenham. But Glenham is outside of City limits if I have to service it. If I drive over the I-84 bridge to turn around in the Hudson View apartments to turn back to Beacon, I’m outside of City limits.”

Eventually, Reuben trusted me and showed me the letter. It said exactly what he said it said. Behind the letter was a thick stack of papers. “What are these?” I asked.

“The complaints,” he answered. He was reluctant to let me see them. We chatted some more, and I asked again if I could see them. “What could be so bad that I cannot see them? Is there something unimaginable?” I rattled off some unimaginable things. Surprised, he smiled and said “No,” and his hesitation disappeared. I turned the page to start looking through the stack of complaints. The stack of paper was thick, about half an inch.

These complaints started in the summer of 2020. They weren’t the first against Reuben in his life. He’s already been through another set in 2019, which you can read about here. The summer of 2020 was the same time that Reuben began speaking out at Black Lives Matter speaking events at Pete & Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park about his long history of working in the Highway Department, and racially charged and unfair treatment he has seen, experienced, and been told about while working there.

The complaints read as rows and rows of almost the same words on different line items of dates that said something vague like:

“On July 23*, 2020, Reuben Simmons was at the intersection of South Avenue and Main Street fixing a sign, and did not complete his work.”

“On July 23*, 2020, Reuben Simmons returned late from lunch.”

Copy/Paste those two complaints, change the dates and the intersections, and multiply by 50. Many, many rows of the same repeated. And then finally, a different complaint:

“On September 12*, 2020, Reuben Simmons…” and it was something about how he used a certain number of his Personal hours within a 4-hour period in a way that did not fit compliance.

*The number of this exact date has been estimated. I didn’t take a screenshot. But these were the months.

The worst complaint was a vehicle accident at the transfer station where he hit a civilian car with a company truck. OK. People have accidents. I’ve turned around several times in the transfer station, and it is tight. Question is: Have other employees who have also had accidents in company vehicles been disciplined with a 30-day unpaid leave? We wouldn’t know, because the City of Beacon won’t comment on personnel matters. And they may not answer all FOIL requests. None of mine, at least. And none of them, if answered, have been published since August 2020, as Mayor Kyriacou promised.

So what happened? The accident itself was reported as a complaint. Reuben was supposed to call his supervisor to report an accident, which he did. But the next complaint was that Reuben used curse words to his supervisor during that conversation.

“Curse words?” I asked? Reuben answered: “Yes. I used curse words about the situation in response to what my supervisor was saying. Not calling my supervisor any curse word directly. But speaking about the situation.”

Having a potty-mouth myself, I asked Reuben: “Does no one use curse words in the Highway Department?”

“They use them all the time. Worse. They use racial slurs,” he said matter-of-factly.

Next Step: A “Hearing.” With Witnesses Called By The City Of Beacon

After Reuben refused to resign or sign the letter saying that Beacon could fire him at any time for any reason, he had the option of having a “hearing.” At that hearing, the City of Beacon told him that they were bringing witnesses.

According to Reuben, the list of witness names were not given to his attorney, William T. Burke.

Ironically, back in the day when Reuben filed a harassment complaint about the unsanctioned petition, that the City of Beacon via City Administrator Anthony Ruggiero did not pursue because of lack of physical evidence of the paper petition, the City of Beacon did not care about witnesses. Reuben said he had 2 witnesses: the 2 Black employees who were eventually shown the unsanctioned petition. And Paula, the current union president who allegedly had the unsanctioned petition show up on her desk (perhaps how like Councilperson Jodi McCredo had a mystery letter show up on her front porch, putting her in a very awkward position), which then allegedly disappeared. None of these witnesses mattered for that hearing.

But on March 5, 2021, in a hearing to further detail complaints made against Reuben, the witnesses mattered. What’s that people say about All Lives Matter?

How Long Has Reuben Worked For The City Of Beacon?

Reuben has worked for the City of Beacon Highway Department since 2002, starting as “Summer Help.” His resume goes like this: City of Beacon Summer Help in parks, 2002-2008; Laborer, 2008-2012; Union President for City of Beacon CSEA Local 814 unit 6662, 2009-2017; Maintenance Worker, 2012-2017; Highway Superintendent, 2017-2018; Maintenance Worker, May 2018-August 2019; Working Supervisor, August 2018-March 2020; Maintenance Worker, March 2020-present.

After the summer of 2020 rush of complaints, the City presented Reuben with the opportunity to resign. When he declined, they offered him a letter that he could sign saying that they could fire him for any reason. He asked what that reason could be, and they would not specify. So it easily could have been: “Reuben was at the intersection of Liberty and East Main fixing a sign and did not complete his work.”

He declined to sign these. As he said he did years ago when the City presented him with a letter stating that there were no “racial tensions” in the Highway Department.

“Why Would This Be Happening To You?”

The obvious question is: “Why is this happening to you?” Due in part to Reuben’s role as union president for those years, he may have made people upset. Recently, however, the public has started speaking out, beginning with Stefon Seward, a founding member of Beacon4Black Lives who spoke out on a City Council call during the public comment period, resulting in this deep dive by ALBB to learn new information.

Reuben concluded: "I try to exhaust all internal avenues and best efforts to avoid the situation I am in today, and the City ignored all of that (see past article for reference). Maybe I'm the best person to be in this. I'm embarrassed to be in this. I'm ashamed of the City. In my 19-year career here. It's disturbing and disgusting. Beacon is better than this."

What is at stake if Reuben is fired or resigns? “My career will be cut short and I will lose the opportunity to receive my full retirement potential.”

How ALBB Knows Reuben

Unfortunately, in hearing stories of Black lives, or maybe any life, it comes down to who you know, and why you know it. I first got to know Reuben in 2019 when he got the idea to organize Beacon’s live music event, Rock Out 4 Mental Health, the first music event to bring mental health services throughout the Hudson Valley together in one place set to music, so that the community could easily meet them and get to know these services better. Reuben wanted to de-stigmatize mental health.

I didn’t know at the time that his good friend had died of substance abuse. I heard that friend’s story from his mother, who spoke at the event that June. In attendance at the event were Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro, who is a huge advocate for mental health, and state senator Sue Serino, whose brother died by suicide.

Reuben’s nonprofit organization, I Am Beacon, asked me to be on the planning committee for Rock Out 4 Mental Health. I don’t say yes to many things because of time, but I said yes to this immediately. Reuben ran every planning meeting that we had in my old office on Main Street every other Tuesday. I brought my toddler. Reuben ran in one morning in his bright yellow Beacon Highway Department sweatshirt, to give us notes and direction for the meeting. Reuben says he got personal time approved through Payroll, then attended the meeting. He said he saw his boss, Michael Manzi, that morning. They waved to each other, but then 2 months later Reuben was written up about the attendance of that meeting as a form of discipline, which Reuben says he later disputed.

That morning, he got written up by his supervisor, Highway Department Superintendent of Streets Michael Manzi, for being late. The complaint went into Reuben’s personnel file. If you have heard the podcast about it, you’ll know that it was during this event planning experience that I learned that Reuben was no longer the Highway Department Superintendent. You’ll remember that when I went to write the article about the event, I visited his LinkedIn to get his proper job title. LinkedIn said he was Maintenance Worker.

I asked Reuben about it, thinking nothing of the question. “Hey Reuben - what’s your job title? I see something different in LinkedIn.” He answered that he couldn’t talk to me about it. Couldn’t answer the question. Was going through some things at work legally, but maybe he could tell me later.

Later came one year later during the Black Lives Matter movement. We were going to have the Rock Out 4 Mental Health event again, and were going to ask the City, which had a new Mayor in place, if we could use Riverfront Park again. The former Mayor Randy Casale and Reuben had been close. They argued in public - both having loud voices coming from passionate places - but they were tight.

Randy Casale was part of why Reuben was promoted to Highway Superintendent. Not long after, however, Reuben’s job title of Highway Superintendent dissolved. Turned to dust. Never existed. He was demoted but there was nothing to demote him from. He just was Maintenance Worker again. Why? That doesn’t make sense, right? Right. Two words of how it happened: “Civil Service.”

The pandemic hit, and all events paused. Except Black Lives Matter marches. Or protests in the name of Black Lives Mattering more than the status quo. Whichever you want to call it. Whichever brand you feel comfortable saying, as people tried to chip away at the original meaning of BLM. Which was that Black people were dying, being fired, being ignored, and having to work extra hard to sustain success they made for themselves. Because of white people keeping them down. You. Me. All of us. Systems in general. “All lives” were keeping them down in the name of comfort. That feeling you get when you feel discomfort, so you turn your eyes away and feel comfortable again in your own little world.

Reuben attended a protest march and took to the microphone at Pete and Toshi Seeger Riverfront Park, and for the first time, in a shaky but strong voice, told his story. Even prior to his taking the microphone, there had been tensions between Reuben and the Highway Department. Complaints had already been written about him.

City Cuts Off ALBB From Responding To Questions

Since ALBB published the article, “During Hot Mess Of Water Department Hires, Beacon Passes Diversity and Inclusion Statement,” Beacon’s City Administrator Chris White has refused to answer any questions from this publication. Our door remains open. We will continue to send questions on this and other totally different matters. Even if we send them into the abyss and only hear crickets back.

City Administrator Chris White asked for a FaceTime-type call to get to know each other, since I keep emailing him questions. I email questions to lots of people. To the office of Dutchess County, or to business owners. No one else has requested a video chat to get to know each other better. I get it. I’m a people person too. I like to meet people. But in the media sense, it’s not necessary.

Chris’ final words, for now, to this publication are below. These are very similar to when Mayor Kyriacou responded to one of my questions asking him if he really said something that I had heard. Mayor’s Kyriacou’s response was to give me the definition of hearsay. Hearsay is when you don’t seek confirmation after you hear about what someone may have said. I’m not sure what it’s called when someone doesn’t answer the question but gives you a run-around, condescending, derogatory response.

For the record: Chris seems to do very great work. I am looking forward to his work in project management that he will do in the name of the natural environment. In the name of personnel matters, the experience thus far has been surprising. Perhaps that will change some day.

Until that time, while the City stonewalls any questions about treatment of employees by its employees and its employers, A Little Beacon Blog will continue to receive stories from residents of the community, and will continue to listen to them with compassion. If these stories line up with other stories, and begin matching and forming a pattern, those stories will continue to get published.

some physical proof cannot be seen in words. Slinging racial slurs will never have proof. Unless they are recorded, as with much, much worse happenings like with Rodney King or George Floyd. No one is free from racist behavior. Every day, every single one of us must keep ourselves in check. We must educate ourselves; reach out to make new friends and deeper friendships, to keep ourselves in check.

This treatment of a friend is nothing I would have expected from the City of Beacon. But this story is not new. It’s just not told in a public way.

Below is the current City Administrator Chris White’s last response to me. My response to him follows. Again. I think Chris is very talented. Anthony Ruggiero is very talented too, and I’m so bummed that he resigned. As the City of Beacon has stated: “We have work to do.” Anyone, in any position they are in now, can do better, and shift moves made in their past.

Thank you for your response. I am unable to respond to further questions until you and I have some discussion about journalistic standards for your articles. Since I replaced Anthony, I have tried to treat you as I would a news outlet, but I’m realizing that your blog does not operate in the same manner. I have to say that I also liked your blog’s focus on small businesses in Beacon so I tried to give you the benefit of the doubt in responding to you as time allowed.

The article that you just published on City hiring, which is referred to as a “hot mess,” certainly does not meet basic journalistic standards for unbiased reporting. If you would like the City to respond to you as we do with news media, we will need to establish some comparable reporting standards. With a simple conversation, we could have cleared up some of the inaccuracies and misleading assertions in this article, which is what the local papers would have done before publishing.

If you would like to have a conversation at some point to discuss this further, please let me know, and I will try to be available to you. However, until we can establish some sort of standards, I am not able to respond to further questions.

Hi Chris,

I understand where you are coming from.

I do not know about other news outlets having conversations with administrations about how those administrations are covered, but having that discussion is not something I would need to have in order to get accurate information for a story, or try to at least. Informing about known or unknown information is what I would do.

Oftentimes, when a positive adjective is used, people are happy. When an unflattering one is used, the word “unbiased” gets returned.

As for coverage of businesses in Beacon, thank you. However, there may be times when local government decisions are unfavorable to business, or a certain businesses, and you may then not like that coverage, or that article.

Any reporter is biased, as a human. Only so many words and topics can get covered because of time and space (paper and digital), so by the very nature of publishing, every piece of content produced is biased.

With a simple email response, you can always shed light on inaccuracies if there are items that need corrected.

As a local paper would have done before publishing, I did try to get answers from you, in order to get as much accuracy as possible. Which you would not give. And now are stating will continue to not give any unless we have a conversation.

This article is not just for Reuben. As torturous as this is to watch. This is for all of the other Black employees who have been ignored by the City of Beacon, or squashed down into dissolved positions.

The people involved in that - are probably some of the best people. Some of the best friends. Families who your family may have had play dates with. This is your check. My check. Everyone’s check. The check of all people’s lives.

Stories resulting from past articles on this are already coming from people who have been ignored on repeat. Most likely, this will extend into the Hispanic, Arab, Jamaican, Everyone community. Get comfortable with people who sound different than you. Are louder than you. Move differently than you.

Maybe you could shake it up and move differently too! Let your own passion out! Without shaming someone when they do it.

Back when the pandemic was declared a pandemic, Ahmaud Arbery was killed - shot - hunted down - by two white men in a pickup truck near Brunswick, GA. I watched the video on Twitter. Unfiltered. Un-”Graphic Warning.” I followed the local GA news for legal developments. Events happened to other Black people that did not make it to social media, but then George Floyd was killed by police in Minneapolis. Also video taped by many people as it happened. Everyone video taping stayed in their corners as events played out. That’s what we are used to - staying in our places in our corners. Thankfully these images made it to our newsfeeds, so that we could experience how Black people are seen, not seen.

Most people watching the social revolution/re-awakening of 2020 experienced deep feelings, and some people who are not Black wanted to do something. Black people started shouting: “Silence is Violence, Speak!” mainly to the white people in the room who have been bred to be mainly silent. To stay safe. To keep the place. The ground started shaking, and white people wanted to speak. White people wanted to support. But how?

Media across the country started making Black Owned Business Directories. Readers were writing in to ALBB: “Where can we support? Who can we support? What Black owned businesses can we support?” Here at A Little Beacon Blog, our fingers started typing. Writer Izdihar DaBashi feverishly emailed: “Are you making a Black Owned Business Directory? I want to make one - can we make one?” Designer Allie Bopp heard this, and said: “It needs a logo - I can make a logo!”

So we started on this Black Owned Business Directory. Right before I emailed Allie to brainstorm the logo, I realized: “Wait. We need to talk to someone who is Black, who experiences being an artist and business owner as a Black person. They are going to feel this, and this logo needs to be theirs. We need to find them to design the logo. Sadly, it has just occurred to me that I don’t know any Black graphic designers in Beacon, and I’m sure there are quire a few.”

And thank gosh we did. Because that’s how we met the architectural designer, Perry Crosson, and Lauren Johnson, a digital brander and founder of The Hyacinth Group (@thehyacinthgroup). We did the same for a Juneteenth logo for 2020. Did a call for artists, and met Nickeya Allen who answered the call on behalf of her children, which has blossomed into a beautiful friendship.

To Be Seen

Black owned businesses are here, they just aren’t always seen. Stereotypes could get in the way, blocking the vision of what is true. When I spoke to Perry to give him direction for the logo, my only direction was: “It could include many shades of color, to show different racial identities, but whatever strikes you. Take it and own it.”

Perry ruminated in it. As he developed it, his mother asked him what he was working on, and he told her. She suggested that he use the Alsdorf building in Newburgh as inspiration. It was a no-brainer for her. The building was built in 1915 as the Alsdorf School of Music and Dancing, a business started started in 1849 by Professor Dubois Alsdorf, formerly a slave in Ulster County who (acquired, gained, earned, was granted….what is the word here?) manumission. Manumission is something that frees a person from slavery. According to NewburghNY.org, George Alsdorf and his wife Caroline headed to Newburgh “within 20 years of his manumission) at 260-262 Washington Street.

Perry’s curiosity was piqued. He pursued it, dove into the research, looked into the rights of the building to make sure he could use it as a logo, and delivered. Perry’s background is in architecture, so this subject matter was even more up his ally.

The Alsdorf Building As Part Of The Logo

In preparation for the IG Live I did with Lauren and Perry on Wednesday (2/24/2021) about Black businesses locally and in general, I took a pause to reflect on why I loved the logo. Of course brick and mortar buildings are often used when representing businesses. But…

Black people owning property is a big deal. They were written out of property ownership - and voting rights - in the United States Constitution and had to work themselves into the Bill of Rights over many years. Undocumented practices that excluded Black people from property ownership (vague deterrences, suggestions to take education classes before owning property, things that white people do not usually get recommended to do) may not have been written into laws, were conducted that simply made it hard for Black people to acquire the title to property. A recent example: maybe the date of a contract to close on the home was 30 days, but suddenly move to 20 days (just happened to my Black friend in December 2020). Nothing that can be proven as racist, but something that keeps a friend who is Black out of almost owning her home in Poughkeepsie. When she appealed to the homeowner to have patience with the all of the documents they needed to file, his response was “It’s not me! It’s the bank!” And the hot potato hops around the room. Thankfully, she closed on the house.

The concept of “Generational Wealth” - is a term that is new to me, but is one that is common in my white community as “old money.” People in the Black community tend to speak of “Generational Wealth” as the goal of what needs acquired in order to help their children’s paths to security be more…secure.

“Old money” takes less effort, is usually something stepped into, is sometimes squandered, and is possibly not understood, if finances are not discussed in the open within families.

Hence, the selection of the building for this logo by the designer Perry takes even more meaning. Nursing Home Workers Stage Picket Calling For Owners To Be Transparent in Staff Treatment and Quality Care - In Poughkeepsie Thursday

Since the pandemic, the employees and residents of Nursing Homes have been in the national spotlight, out of concern for their physical and emotional safety. The pandemic has brought what may be systematic problems within the nursing home industry to light. Said Milly Silva, Executive Vice President of the Nursing Home Division: “Our members have been battling COVID-19 for the last year, but issues like low wages and a lack of adequate time to devote to individual patient care existed pre-COVID. Our goal is to enact real reforms to raise standards within the industry, and ensure that meaningful investment is made in residents and workers once and for all,”

In a prepared statement to the Legislature during hearings, which is published on NYSenate.gov, Milly stated: “The nursing home industry is not going to be the same after this pandemic. Resident census is lower, and it is unclear how quickly it will recover. Returning to the status quo pre-pandemic is impossible. More than that, it is not morally acceptable. New York ranked 31st in the nation for nursing home quality according to CMS surveys, and in the bottom 10 nationally for persistent pressure ulcers. Residents are only getting 2.38 hours of hands-on care per day, earning our state a ‘D”’on a national scorecard. Nursing home caregivers are forced to work multiple jobs to make ends meet, leading to staff turnover and burnout. We can, and must, do much, much better.”

Picket In Poughkeepsie By Nursing Home Employees

Today, Thursday, February 18, 2021, nursing home staff represented by the United Healthcare Workers East (1199SEIU) are hosting a picket and holding vigils in Poughkeepsie, calling for nursing home reform, transparency and investment in quality care.

According to the press release announcing the picket, “1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East is the largest and fastest-growing healthcare union in America,” it says. “We represent over 450,000 nurses and caregivers throughout New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Maryland, Washington, D.C. and Florida. Our mission is to achieve quality care and good jobs for all.”

1199SEIU Nursing Home Workers Stage Statewide Pickets and Vigils, Call for Nursing Home Reform, Transparency and Investment in Quality Care

Hundreds of workers in the nation’s largest healthcare union will hold vigils and demonstrations outside nursing home facilities to demand investment in people over profits.

New York ranks 45th in the nation in an important quality metric due to the large number of nursing homes with below-average hours of care per resident

1199SEIU nursing home workers in Poughkeepsie are among the hundreds of members of 1199SEIU Healthcare Workers East, the nation’s largest healthcare union, who will be holding demonstrations and vigils at more than 20 nursing homes across New York State, calling for greater transparency and investment in quality resident care. 

Actions will also be held at nursing homes in Schenectady, Erie, Jefferson, Monroe, Nassau, Niagara, Onondaga, Oneida, and Suffolk counties and New York City.  Many of these facilities have low average hours of care per resident, use a high number of related parties to hide profits, or otherwise rank poorly in care quality. 

“For far too long, nursing homes around New York State have made investment in resident care an afterthought,” said Milly Silva, Executive Vice President of the Nursing Home Division.

“We are calling on these for-profit nursing homes to prioritize and invest in people – the residents and the workers who care for them day in and day out.  Our members have been battling COVID-19 for the last year, but issues like low wages and a lack of adequate time to devote to individual patient care existed pre-COVID. Our goal is to enact real reforms to raise standards within the industry, and ensure that meaningful investment is made in residents and workers once and for all,” Silva continued.

The demonstrations are the latest actions led by the union to call attention to the need for systemic reform of the nursing home industry. Last week, 1199SEIU launched a multi-million dollar ad campaign, Invest in Quality Care, to press the legislature to ensure nursing homes focus on quality care to protect residents and the dedicated workers who care for them, rather than maximizing profits. On Valentine’s Day, members across New York engaged in a virtual “sticker” campaign, using social media to urge their State Assemblymembers and Senators to enact key reforms and ensure the most vulnerable in the state get the investment and care they need.

Forty residents. Two aides. And me. How is it possible for me to meet the needs of my residents? Today, I tried to spend time with a very scared man who recently almost died from COVID and still has a lot of anxiety. He has no family other than those of us who take care of him at River Valley. But there were 39 other people who needed my attention, and I had to walk away. He was upset. And I was upset. So many co-workers have left or are planning to leave. That’s terrible for continuity of care. It’s terrible for those of us left. But I understand. It feels unbearable so often. The state needs to make changes in how nursing homes owners do business.”

1199SEIU’s Invest in Quality Care campaign points out that Instead of investing in enough staff to ensure quality care for residents, many nursing home owners are hiding their profits by sub-contracting services to companies they own, often at inflated prices.

1199SEIU and its members are calling on Governor Cuomo and the State Legislature to pass systemic reform for the nursing home industry to improve transparency, hold operators accountable for misconduct, and ensure they prioritize resident care over maximized profits.

As New York Attorney General Letitia James found in a shocking new report on the impact of COVID-19 on nursing homes, “the current state reimbursement model for nursing homes gives a financial incentive to owners of for-profit nursing homes to transfer funds to related parties (ultimately increasing their own profit) instead of investing in higher levels of staffing and PPE.”

What Businesses Need To Do To Stay Open If People Are Afraid To Come Inside During A Pandemic

Do you own a business, have made investments to adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines, but people aren’t coming in yet? There are a few easy things you could do to turn this around.

GOOGLING:
When people Google your business, they are getting a few options: Phone to call, and Website to click. They are going to call first. If you don’t feel like answering the phone, or if you have a a voicemail answer for you with directions on what numbers to press to get to a person, then include this entire message of safety on that voicemail. If you don’t, customers who are watching that Dashboard of active COVID-19 cases might not come. Because you didn’t make them feel safe. This is your responsibility in these times.

VOICEMAILS:
When a customer calls your place of business, your voicemail or auto-answering service needs to tell them how your business is being safe. Don’t assume people know what regulations you needed to follow. People like to hear the reassurances.

Are your doors open for ventilation? Did you invest in air-purifiers? Do you use fans? Does your staff wear masks? Do your customers need to wear masks? Do you have reduced % capacity? If so, state what that is. Do you have a waiting policy? Do your customers need to wait in the parking lot for when their turn is ready? Do you have a deep-clean system? Great! State all of this. Yes, it’s a huge pain for you as a business to do this. But your customers do want to hear it. They will feel reassured, and most likely will come to your place of business.

WEBSITE:
All of your COVID-19 safety measures need to be stated on your website in a special section called COVID-19. Not sure it this is required by an Executive Order of any kind, but for regular people searching to feel good and safe, this is required if you want them to walk through your doors. Sure, you may think: “My customers feel safe no matter what.” Well, there are plenty of other customers who are not coming in because they don’t know your drill. If you have a drill. You have a drill, right? : )

SOCIAL MEDIA:
Fill your social feed on Instagram, Facebook and/or TikTok with pictures of your safety moves. Make them fun! Safety is sexy! If you don’t have time to do this, hire someone to do it for you. New Grants For Shuttered Venues And PPP Money Available - Webinars On How To Apply Are This Week

The Dutchess Business Notification Network sent out an alert today (Wednesday) to a webinar happening tomorrow (Thursday) for venues who shuttered because of the pandemic, to possibly receive grant money. Details about how the grant works are sparse, and if it is anything like the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), which started off as a “forgivable” loan, could change over time. Businesses currently need to apply to be forgiven the PPP loan that was granted to them, and details on how to apply and who can apply and when to apply for PPP loan forgiveness have been shifting. Reports are coming out that indicate small businesses have started to be forgiven the loan if they meet the criteria.

New Tea Shop Opens In Beacon: Misstea For Loose Leaf Teas & Herbal Infusions

There is no greater gift in life than the gift of tea… can’t figure out what to gift your life-long friend? Tea. Your friend who just became a new mom? Tea. Your thrice removed cousin? Tea. Your greatest nemesis? Tea, so they are always forced to remember you for your exquisite taste. Tea can carry an intimate sentiment or remain as a neutral gift.

You can ring in the new year just right with blooming teas or marvelous options in loose-leaf varieties. Forget the champagne and sparkles, there’s nothing quite as fancy as the perfect cup of tea… I wouldn’t know though because I simply refuse to drink tea unless it’s out of an oversized themed mug (this month it’s in the form of a thermal-changing Vangogh mug).

Therefore, it is with a thank goodness that a new tea shop opened in Beacon, Misstea, a tea shop offering organic loose leaf teas, herbal infusions and other plant based wellness goodies handcrafted in New York, from owners and best friends: Mor Tzivoni and Revital Shoua. They settled the shop into Main Street on the east end of town near Mount Beacon right by the waterfall and blinking traffic light known as the Dummy Light. Founded by two best friends, Mor Tzivoni and Revital Shoua, who over the course of 5 years traveled trips around the world sampling tea from all over such as chai from India and green tea from Japan.

Misstea has long established roots in New York City prior to a permanent residence in Beacon. In 2008, Misstea began as a pop-up booth at the Union Square Holiday Market. Despite the Recession, the right place, time, opportunity, and partner appeared - a moment Mor Tzivoni refers to as “serendipity”. Mor and Revital were attracted to what they describe as Beacon’s “diverse and warm community” especially as this small city mirrors Brooklyn’s liveliness but offers a chance to appreciate the surrounding nature.

Original Tea Blends Are Made At Misstea

The teas and herbs come from all over the world with blenders that work with Misstea’s recipes before being packed at the Beacon shop. Initially, Misstea began with 15 different teas and have since expanded to 40. The first tea flavor produced was a relaxing herbal infusion, appropriately named “Serenitea”. Misstea wanted to provide New Yorkers with a natural way of relaxing at the end of busy days. A quick glance at their collection confirms their specialty remains in herbal infusions.

Grand Opening To Come…(But Is Already Open!)

Misstea hopes to create a lively and cozy atmosphere where people can “enjoy the view, the scents, the flavor, and give a great memory for every customer.” Though the shop opened on October 7th 2020, a grand opening still exists on the horizon. The beginning of the pandemic certainly postponed a grand opening and caused adjustments in planning events and weekend brunches, but never formed a doubt in opening the shop in Beacon. As for concerns of a second wave, Misstea reassures us that with 12 years of experience in making tea, they are not worried about going anywhere as “tea is timeless”. Plus, there is always an option to order online through their shop or select a pick-up in store option.

The tea shop plans to serve pastries, gluten-free snacks, and pairings with different teas… a surprise Misstea promises we can look forward to experiencing. We can expect information on the benefits of tea, teapots served at tables and sets ready-made for special events and holidays. Beacon Gets 13" - 20" Of Snow; Plows And Shovels Are Moving

Beacon is as North Pole ready as it will ever be, with the first snowfall of the season bringing 13”-20” in Beacon according to my tape measure, and 16” at least in the region according to Dutchess County. The National Weather Service pointed out that it was more snow for some areas like Central Park than fell all last year, as reported by CNN.

Beacon’s Highway Department was out all Wednesday night and into Thursday afternoon, clearing snow and putting down materials for safer driving. According to Dutchess County’s press release sent today: “Road conditions are difficult throughout Dutchess County. Highway crews made multiple rounds plowing and applying materials throughout the night and continue this morning, but rate of snowfall has been difficult for crews to keep up. It is expected it will be several hours after the conclusion of the storm before roadways are fully addressed as the low temperatures and blowing winds will continue to move snow around.”

Dutchess County added staff to their 9-1-1 call center, but fortunately a low volume of calls came in. Also according to the press release, Central Hudson reported that LaGrange experienced outages, but otherwise there were no wide-spread outages.

Public transportation will resume on Friday for Dutchess County, and due to bad roads in Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County Government offices were closed.

Beacon businesses often arrive to their shops to dig out, aiming to be open for people taking breaks in between shoveling, and to be available for supplies. With the 2021 Budget discussion hot off the City Council books - which has been voted on to be approved - there was much chatter about the items in - or not in - the budget. Chatter is an understatement. There was a large evening protest about the 2021 budget when the budget first came out because of the unavoidable headline of the Police budget being increased despite wide calls for a decrease in police funding. The increase was a matter or pre-negotiated contracts with the Police Union that does not fit into the bars of this rhyme, as well as the long haul that is union negotiations and the power that unions hold - for better or worse.

While the Police budget was the lead character in the protest, many members of the public during Budget Season (October - December) called into City Council Meetings every other week during Public Comment to voice their concern for the lack of focus on affordable housing in the budget. At the same time, some members of the public were calling for the property tax increase to go to cap, of 2%, in order to fund more community services. However, this would result in more of an increase for all in some form, either directly as a homeowner, or indirectly as a renter if the landlord raises the rent. Ultimately, Mayor Lee Kyriacou maintained his direction of not going to cap, and was supported by City Council in the budget.

Personal/Residential Rent Experiences

People did begin writing into A Little Beacon Blog with the concern of affordable housing and rental as well. One reader, who wanted to remain anonymous because, they stated, “everyone knows someone” in a small town, wanted to share their concern of rising rents. They stated:

“I’ll share my experience about affordable living. I’m originally from (somewhere in the 5 boroughs) but my family lives in (somewhere up north) for the last 20 years and I moved to Beacon about 6 years ago.

“The rent was very affordable. A year ago, my house was sold to an investor and immediately he tired to raise my rent $150 a month after living in the space for 4 years. I very kindly said no way - and then asked him down to the original rent and had to school him that everyone in the building had lived here for years and that our landlord only raised the rent $20 years for cost of living.

“Needless to say, 2 tenants moved out because of that and of course people from Manhattan moved in who paid $1,600 instead of the going $1,300/$1,400.

“So because of the stay at home work order, you have NYC salaries coming in, drawing up every price while the Hudson Valley local residents stay within their former means as prices are driven up on real estate and other goods. It’s a huge shifting around.

“I am happy I know how to advocate for myself, and I’m always looking on the bright side. There are some good things to everything.”

This reader is not the only one. In A Little Beacon Blog’s immediate sphere, one of our own was threatened by their landlord with a raised rent, all of a sudden. The landlord wanted to sell the house at an inflated price that they were sure would attract New York City folk. This ALBB person left their rental house, and pursued buying a home in Wappingers Falls. After a questionable process, the move ended in success, and they are now proud homeowners in Wappingers, leaving the landlord of their formal rental house a bit surprised. They aren’t the first one with a story like this.

Business Rent Increases

In the business world, there are about 20 business turnovers in Beacon, which A Little Beacon Blog hasn’t been able to blog about yet, despite this chronic turnover starting during the pandemic.

Businesses are usually quiet about how they negotiate with their landlords. The landlords hold power over them, as their landlords hold the keys to their shops. They can pull the lease, and out the shop goes. In fact, simply knowing the going rate for square footage can be difficult to come by, as business owners keep their cards close to the vest.

In terms of how businesses fared during the first shutdown, many of whom continue to suffer from reduced capacity and overall comfort levels of returning to offices, some Beacon landlords gave no concessions during the pandemic. While some businesses were shut, not bringing in any income, some landlords pondered if the renter would stay, and wanted to see financials and projections of shut-down businesses. This was especially true for fitness studios - as the landlords considered keeping the business in the space or not.

Some landlords are out of town people, who we will never meet, while other landlords are locals, including Mayor Lee Kayriakou, who owns several properties in Beacon; Nick Page’s family Hudson Valley Todd, LLC (Nick is a Dutchess County Legislator); the owner(s) of Brothers Trattoria; the owner of Minute Men Construction down on Tioranda; and other longtime Beacon residents who have made property ownership part of their profession.

Landlords, Relationships & Pricing

Many times, the reason a business stays or goes in a space can be directly tied to the relationship between the tenant (business owner) and landlord. Some building owners are compassionate with their tenants, as mine was when I had my office in the Telephone Building at 291 Main Street when it was under the ownership of Deobrah Bigelow, who fully renovated the building and it sold to a new owner - Shady Twal - who was much different.

In Beacon right now, we are seeing many turnovers. We may never know - publicly - the details of why those businesses are leaving. So I will share while I left my place on Main Street. Why I left 291 Main Street when a new building owner came to town. It may shed light on what goes on behind the scenes of why your favorite business leaves their storefront.

Personally - I don’t believe in regulation controlling this. I do believe in math, and relationships. Math means that numbers need to add up. A new building owner does need to earn something profitable to sustain their livelihood and their bills. But the relationship is just as important. And can lose a tenant.

Why ALBB Left The Telephone Building

When the new owner came in - Shady Twal - he showed much interested in my business. At the time, A Little Beacon Blog and Tin Shingle did 2 revenue generating models in that building:

  • Hosted Pop-Up Shops

  • Hosted Private Meetings

  • New: started to host a co-working space. In addition to the original business model that is there - Beahive. I did this in an effort to buy the building and keep us all there in one big co-working family. So many ideas were flying around for any of us to stay there.

When the new building owner, Shady Twal, and I first started talking, he loved my business model. He thrived on the pop-up concept, telling me that “his investors” were old-school, and didn’t understand it, but that he did. He told me that because his investors were so old, they weren’t sure if the concept of pop-up shops were legal in this historic building. However, he said, his people in Chicago were looking into it. By the way, he said he was originally from the Hudson Valley, and had moved back to this area - Wappingers Falls specifically - to get back to family roots.

Shady informed me that while pop-ups might not be legal, his people might be OK with it if I gave them a cut of my business from the event space rental business. I knew that the pop-up shops were legal. My former landlord, Deborah Bigelow, was by the book. Big time. So if she allowed it, it was most likely legal. In due diligence, I called the Building Department. The Building Inspector, David Buckley, told me that the pop-up shops were very much very legal.

To present the rent increase, Shady took me to coffee, and told me that there was a very long line for people who wanted my space. I was paying $25/square foot, but that he was told he could get $75/square foot. He could offer me $35/square foot. Plus, he had big ideas for how he could expand my business with more events. Shady made sure to tell me that if for some reason, I couldn’t get approval on future events for some reason, he and his investors could give me approval, if I gave them a cut of the business. He asked if I understood what he was talking about. I told him I understood very well.

When the lease arrived in my inbox, it included a demand for 20% of my event business. This 20% take also included a percentage of my pop-up shop’s income from their sale. This was a no-go for me. In no way was my landlord qualified to take 20% of my business. Let alone any % of the shops who rented from me. My business model was a flat rate, so that my renters could make as much money as they wanted. They paid me a flat rate, and I did as much promotion as possible to help their chances of a great sales weekend.

Of course, this was a non-negotiable item. When I balked at the item in the lease, Shady tried to backtrack, telling me why this was something I should agree to. I disagreed. He agreed to take it off the table. But by then, all trust was broken. There had been other signs that were glaring red flags, and now they were all flashing and blinking as big as possible. I told him I was out. I gave notice that I would move out by January 31, 2020.

This decision was so hard. I said to myself over and over again: “Just deal with it. Everyone has to deal with sucky landlords.” But, my experience with him on normal days - on weekend days when I was co-hosting events - became painful. He talked to me the entire time of changes he wanted to make. Major security systems he wanted to put in. Locked doors (I had an open-door policy, which is customary in retail pop-ups). He wanted to take ownership of the glass door of my office door - where he would hold 50% of what could be written there. My office windows on Main Street - he wanted ownership of those as well, giving me approval of how I could decorate.

It was too much. I was out. I cried. I sobbed. I was leaving a community space that this person had told me he loved, and wanted to support. But there was no way to nurture it within that environment. The lease also included a Privacy Policy clause, where I could not talk about him or the building or the investors. As a publisher, that was of course impossible. For example: the building had just been tagged in a graffiti artist attack, that damaged many buildings in Beacon. And I wasn’t allowed to talk about it.

I moved out very quickly that month. I painted over my chalk-board editorial calendars on the wall. He told me I didn’t need to, but I insisted. When I brought in professional painters to do it, he demanded to see paperwork and insurance from them. Done and delivered. I did not want to leave one ounce of my vision behind.

All cleared out, I arrived on the final day to show him that everything was neat and clean, ready for the security deposit to be returned to me in full. He was so nice that day, saying that everything was 100% great. Until the time came for the security deposit. His attorney, Patrick from Sobo and Sobo, had sent me a multi-page contract that was mainly comprised of a silence-clause, telling me I could not speak of Shady Twal, or the Telephone Building, or any investor or anyone involved at any time.

Of course there was no way I was going to sign that. That day, while I was closing out my clean office, Shady casually told me I could talk to his attorney about the security deposit. I told him that I had already, and that I wasn’t signing a privacy clause, and to send me a check to my new PO Box. Shady got angry, and told me that I knew everything about him, why wouldn’t I sign this. He then said that there wasn’t any money in his building account, based on how he bought the building.

Fortunately, a woman who he introduced as his business partner, Crystal, who it turns out is a realtor, and who now has an office in the Telephone Building, ominously stated: “There is money in an accountant at Sobo and Sobo,” which was the attorney of the building and of Shady.

Later that afternoon, I emailed the attorney, Patrick, letting him know I had the good fortune of meeting Crystal, after Shady told me there was no money in the account, but that Crystal kindly told me that there was, and to please send the check to my brand new PO Box in the Beacon Post Office.

I tell you this story because one never knows what happens between the lines of a business transaction, or of a business moving out.

We wish all of these businesses the best: those who have opened here - in brand new locations - or who moved down the road to occupy a newly empty space - and to those who closed up shop and are trying to do it differently, or maybe here again.

Beacon Opens Applications For $150K In Microenterprise Stabilization Grants To Up To 15 Eligible Businesses In Select Blocks

During the November 2, 2020 City Council Meeting, the Council voted to begin accepting applications from Beacon businesses negatively impacted by the pandemic and who fall within a block zone for a Microenterprise Stabilization Grant. The City of Beacon aims to distribute up to 15 grants of up to $10,000, from a fund source totaling $150,000. A map of eligible business locations can be seen here.

This grant is made available from U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant COVID/CARES Act (CDBG-CV) which was provided to Dutchess County’s Urban County CDBG Consortium, who initially released $430,000 in September 2020 for the region. Community Capital of New York will manage the application and distribution process.

During the 10/26/2020 City Council Workshop discussion of this opportunity with Community Capital of New York, City Council did discuss how the considerations would work for grant approvals, and did want some flexibility in the decision-making process.

There are restrictions on the grant, including income limits, business types, and home-based businesses, who are not eligible. One of the goals of the grants, says Beacon’s City Administrator Anthony Ruggiero, “is for the money to be used to keep commercial areas vibrant.”

If a business was located within the designated area and left their physical space to conform to COVID-19 guidelines and is now working from home, an appeal could be considered, Anthony tells A Little Beacon Blog. “If the business was formerly in a commercial building, but workers are now working from home to abide by the COVID guidelines, I would think it could be considered. We would want to know if they had a commercial lease that was still in effect, and if it is their intention to return to that space once we have the all clear. One of the goals is for the money to be used to keep commercial areas vibrant. We would give priority to those businesses that are still out there on Main Street or even require that they are still operating from that space.”

Businesses must show that they are not duplicating federally granted money from the CARES ACT, such as PPP or EIDL or other similar programs. If a business already received a Microenterprise Grant from Dutchess County, they are not automatically declined, but “priority will be given to those businesses who have not received a Dutchess grant,” Anthony tells A Little Beacon Blog. “The funds for both programs are limited and both the City and the County want to make sure that as many businesses as possible get some help.”

Money Monday: Ways To Spend Money To Save Money During Low Or No Holiday Budget Time (Sponsored Post)

Today is Cyber Monday, and your inbox is lighting up with email after email of cyber deals you could score with your favorite brands now. If you have the budget to spend, YAY! If you have the budget to buy products or supplies for your favorite non-profit, YAY! If you don’t have the budget to spend, and you do have some money somewhere, you may be able to pay that money in a long-term beneficial way, and that is a double-YAY. This article takes a different approach to Cyber Monday, to focus on what you can do during your normal day to make your money work for you, if you do spend it.

Over at Tin Shingle, Mondays usually mean Money Monday. Tin Shingle is an empowerment and education platform for business owners who are learning how to get the word out about their businesses and innitiatives. A good amount of Tin Shingle’s programming is dedicated to money issues, because people usually go into business for financial and creative freedom. Money issues exist both in the personal and business side of things for business owners. This money tip focuses on the personal side.

Here are suggestions you can do on a Money Monday to feel good about money progress. Being in a pandemic is a great way to remind yourself and others around you to be financially responsible. It’s so easy not to be. Most of us are not. Even celebrities! Most people spend all of their money. Here’s how we can take a check on that, and apply what money we do have to forward progress with money health.

Money Monday is a good day to address things like medical bills, car payments, paying invoices, sending invoices, etc. During the pandemic, your holiday gift list and donation list may be stretched or non-existent. Thankfully, some of you still have jobs or other income, and are spending on Main Street and non-profits. YAY.

Here are some tips on what to do to increase your money health overall, which can make you feel great for more days of the year:

  • Pay Credit Cards. This is an annoying one, because it always feels like there is no money to pay the credit cards. Vow to not add to them, and pay money toward them. Once you pay money to them, and not add to them, this will feel like money well “spent” (even though you already spent it via the loan that the credit card gave you).

  • Don’t Add To The Credit Cards. This is a hard answer to give to a life partner or children who want things for the holidays. If this is your habit each year - adding to the credit cards - break this cycle. Adding to them will not end the cycle of debt. Talking to your kids directly will help their understanding, and may decrease the intensity with which they ask you for things.

  • Say “No” To The Credit Card Bonus Point Cash: Credit cards get you to spend on them by dangling 5% discounts on your total. But this only works if you pay that balance in full in a couple days after your purchase. If you wait for months or years, you are paying 29% interest rate additional on your balance (maybe you have a 16% interest rate if you have a great credit). If, after years and years, you are not paying that balance in full in a couple of days, then stop using the card and use your cash, because you are not saving any money and that 5% is just a mirrage.

  • Cycle The Credit Cards By Tiny Amounts: If you stopped using a card because of the above reasons, you may get a threatening letter a year later saying: “Hey, you need to use your credit card really soon or we are going to close your account.” This is all part of the game. The game that banks don’t want us to win. But we will win! You want that credit history for a good credit score. Don’t let your account close, do use it a tiny amount (Maybe $5? Or $20?). But be careful. Once you use the card that you have successfully stopped using for a year, it is easy to get sucked back in, by thinking “Oh, I can use this card just a little bit…” Pay that card exactly 100% in a couple of days.

  • Look At Your Dividends: If you have dividends from stocks (free money sent to you every now and then from your stocks if your stock issues it) or Whole Life Insurance policies, look at if you want to keep that cash, rather than reinvest it in your Whole Life Policy or stock. Tin Shingle published an article on this today. The article focuses on the benefit of buying Whole Life Insurance for your kids while they are healthy, as it locks in their low rate. This is important for times during pandemics (like right NOW) where if they test positive for COVID-19 and have long-term problems in the recovery, they could be denied coverage, or have a higher rate. Or for yourself, if you don’t have life insurance. This is a time to consider having it. This article explains more.

The best thing you can do during a pandemic is to reclaim your financial health. Even with the lowest budget, and no additional income coming in, choices can be made. At Tin Shingle, business owners try to hustle it up to earn more money and raise their incomes. Always a challenge, but usually a challenge that fuels a small business owner to wake up every day.
