ICE In Beacon...Things To Do! 6/22/2025

This is a strange blend, but yesterday was a strange day…

Before we get into it, ICE struck in Beacon yesterday (Friday, June 20, 2025), with a morning raid on North Elm Street in what appears to be a targeted nabbing. Two weeks ago, ALBB submitted a FOIL request to find out if DHS had tried to partner with the City of Beacon on immigration issues, and the City of Beacon said they had no such requests. Yesterday, after multiple residents contacted Beacon's Mayor Kyriacou about the person who was taken in the raid, the Mayor issued a statement saying that the City of Beacon, nor the Beacon Police, had any knowledge of the raid, which seemed to have included at least one person wearing an FBI vest among otherwise masked men in unmarked vehicles, parked in ways to block the street as they targeted the person in a house. Raids have been going on around Beacon, such as at Walmart in Fishkill and in other municipalities. This is the first one (that ALBB knows of) in a residential neighborhood in Beacon. There may be more to come. Last night, a meeting of Beacon residents convened to form an action plan of how to identify possible ICE employees, issue alerts about locations, and inform people of their rights, in case broadcasting those rights during a time of duress may delay a kidnapping situation. This morning, before finishing this newsletter, ICE was seen again on North Elm and Oak Streets. ALBB took the video and published it here, as well as on Main Street by M&T Bank (recorded by Kamel Jamal). They will be published onto the blog next with more details. Right after the ink dried on the contract to buy what was then The Vault from the owner who was retiring, ALBB sat down with new partners but old friends, Kamel Jamal (of Beacon Bread Company Ziatun The Station Dispensary) and Greg Colon (of Draught Industries ) to hear their entrepreneurial story of how this fire got lit. It had been a year since Kamel had seen Greg at Draught, but Kamel and his wife Lena decided to swing in on one of their afternoon walks. Greg spotted them. They chatted, and then Greg put it out there: “What do you think about The Vault?” The idea spawned. Kamel cocked his head and said: “I’ll call you tomorrow.” During this interview, before the renovation started, ALBB asked: “Do you ever get nervous? Or are you just forward motion, ‘Let’s go…I see what it looks like.’” Greg answered first: “There’s always nerves. For me, it changes. Nervous at first. Then it turns into pure excitement; into fun things. Picking out the bar counters. Then closer to execution, more excitement. You need nerves.” Kamel answered next: “Every time I do this, the excitement starts. When does it start? When the hammer hits the nail. Then I say what the hell was I thinking.” “We’re creators,” Kamel continued. “The fact that we have this ability to create something. It’s never the destination for me. It’s the journey. We live day to day happy, sad. The final destination of life is 6 feet under. It’s the journey for me. The process. So many different emotions. It’s exciting. Hello. This week was quite a week. During Cory Booker's 25 hour long speech, which had many inspiring quotes in it, ALBB was publishing "regular" news articles that we were scheduled to work on. Like about the Newburgh/Beacon ferry, and then the person who fell off the bike. But you all were writing in, asking "Where is the protest on April 5th? WHERE!?!" It's heartwarming. Also, after Cory Booker's speech, he voted to authorize the United States to pay for and produce more bombs to Israel to blow up Palestinians. He was no Kendrick Lamar. Social media went wild with pulling old Cory speeches of him emphatically defending Israel.
